nothing more simple and straightforward than the blues. nothing better to crank up on the stereo while you're pounding beers in the garage than whatever live album guitar solo. i think he's the missing link that mends the schism.

i think it might be a different essence depending on what side of the schism you're on. wilco / neil young side, there's something to be said about simplicity—no fancy stuff, just a good honest song. on the buttrock / arena rock side....yeah, guitar solos actually feels spot-on lol....

i think the "clean enough" / "suitable for kids" factor is more about form than it is about content. dad rock can totally be about smokin weed or bangin girls so long as it SOUNDS like a normal rock and roll song.

"clean enough" feels like a defining trait of one side of this schism. i have distinct memories of someone's dad (not mine) telling me at some point that the thing that made CCR great was that they "never got into drugs like all those other 70s rock bands."

yep, yep, this checks. i'd say eric clapton-type rock represents another definitive branch, as well. maybe some overlap there with the 70s blue collar rock, but "electric blues" feels like it could be a whole separate category of dad.

oh man, wilco, yeah. unquestionably a dad rock band.....maybe that's the real question for me: how and when does that schism occur? is this just a matter of "dads who can party" vs "dads who appreciate modesty and stoicism"?

thesis: the dad spirit of arena rock took form with the next generation of dads as 00s butt rock, just as the dad spirit of straight-laced blue collar 70s rock took form in the next generation of dads as straight laced blue collar indie.

...but then i feel like "dad rock" ALSO gets thrown around to describe, like, anything of a certain alt-country / 2000s indie sadboi vibe. the national, magnolia electric co, etc..
.and it ALSO gets used to describe your non-psychadelic 70s standards -- ccr, neil young, warren zevon, etc.
