Under Fascism, the state makes sweeping changes (sold as an attack on waste, fraud, and abuse) in the name of efficiency…and “the trains will run on time!”

Your parents are almost certainly safer on holiday in Ireland than the US, generally speaking. What is your mom specifically worried about?

My parents are about to head over to Europe for a few months, to places less American-friendly than Ireland, and are utterly unconcerned. Some people will probably ask about politics, but unless your mom is planning to defend the idea of a US invasion of Greenland, I doubt they’ll have any issues.

Institute of Museum and Library Services - Wikipedia

Apparently the Institue of Museum and Library Services is being shut down today… because who needs museums and libraries to learn from, especially when there’s no need for scientists anymore. 🙄

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.

I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Had a nice time at the #standupforscience event in Sacramento yesterday! We need more direct action but things have to start somewhere. As a bonus, my sign ended up in the local paper. 📰

On the CFPB: “These people are nerds for the public good, damn it. Contrast their behavior with that of a billionaire who does a bunch of ketamine and then turns a horde of 19 year-olds loose on the internal databases. It is not hard to see which side here takes the public interest more seriously.”

How wildlife survives after wildfires The biggest danger for wildlife is the aftermath. But many species have evolved to rely on the opportunities created by others.

I gave an interview to the BBC at midnight while the #LAfires were raging outside and I couldn't sleep. Turned into one of the most thorough and well-researched articles on wildlife and wildfire I've had the pleasure of contributing to.

Why it feels good to scratch that itch: the immune benefits of scratching Scratching where it itches reduces the presence of potentially harmful bacteria on the skin, studies in mice show.

Scratching a mosquito bite can offer a moment of bliss, and now scientists have learnt why: scratching activates an immune response that helps to protect the skin against harmful infections, at least in mice.

Ten years later: an LTER synthesis working group leads to discovery and accelerates four careers - LTER The CoRRE Working Group continues to develop new ways to study plant community change across the globe.

We invest in our working groups knowing that two years of funding is hardly enough to fully explore an idea.

One group, funded in 2012, continued working over a decade, publishing a dozen papers and two awesome datasets along the way.

WHITE PEOPLE - here’s a 2-question quiz to help you decide if you are “pro-DEI” or “anti-DEI”.

1. Do you believe brilliant minds can come from anywhere?

2. Do you believe resources and opportunities are unequally distributed?

If you answered “yes” to both - congrats, you’re “pro-DEI”!
