There will have been around 30,000 UK-born and around 6,000 foreign-born *eligible* voters. It is entirely implausible that this is why Reform lost (by 5000). It is plausible it increased the Green majority - probably by about 3000 voters

Nick Fuentes: β€œThe number one political enemy in America is women. … They have to be imprisoned.”

And just like that, Gilead was no longer dystopian fiction.

β€œJust like Hitler imprisoned Gypsies, Jews, communists, you know, all of his political rivals, we have to do the same thing with women… So they go to the gulag first. They go to the breeding gulags.”

Most MPs are honest, hard-working and clean as anything. Dragging Parliament through the dirt hurts everyone, especially the weakest in our society. Next time you wonder why governing has got harder, this type of a debacle is one reason.

So his β€œlapse of judgement” seems to be that he said:

β€œwe haven’t cut front-line services other than what the Conservatives had already planned to do”

So Kent-Dodge was itself a waste of money and effort? Everyone told them that before they started

Matthew Goodwin once ate his own book on TV after a wrong prediction

Nobody noticed his Oct 2024 interview with Nick Robinson included another promise to eat his book if net migration fell to 200k in a year. (It did: net 204k in year to June 2025; will dip far below 200k once we have 2025 stats)

Labour's best hope in Gorton & Denton? Matt Goodwin This by-election was supposed to be a referendum on Starmer - but it could turn into one on Reform’s divisive populist

"Reform's press release notes he was 'first in his family' to go to university – a β€˜fact’ that raised eyebrows given his father, who was awarded a CBE by the Queen for his services to the NHS, acquired a Master’s in Business Administration in the 1980s, and a PhD during Tony Blair’s first term."

After being held in two of them as a boy, I fought for decades urging America to never again build concentration camps and put human beings in them. It breaks my heart to watch this happen twice now in my own lifetime.

Ah yes, Stalinism - where famously everything is on your doorstep and life is happier and more convenient and you don't have to waste whole years of your life in a car, polluting the environment.

Absolutely, that was what Stalinism was all about.

This perfectly demonstrates the pernicious nature of BBC two-sidism.

It almost always benefits the side with the most power.

In this case that's the side which is murdering peaceful protesters in the street, on camera, and then lying about it

Ishould begin with an apology. Last month, I described Robert Jenrick as β€œthe most shameless man in parliament”. His office complained at the time, but I was stubborn and refused to back down. Well, it’s never too late to say you were wrong. Robert Jenrick is not simply the most shameless man in parliament. He is the most shameless man in Britain, the most shameless man on Earth. Quite possibly the most shameless man in history. It is not simply that Jenrick has no shame. He is like a black hole for shame, sucking in the embarrassment of people around him. Which will be quite handy in his new party, Reform.

Nothing became Jenrick’s time in the Conservative Party so much as the leaving of it. For years he had eased his way up the greasy pole, switching positions when necessary, a heating-seeking missile for whichever pose could help him advance, poster boy for the importance of self-belief over ability or integrity. And finally he was undone because he forgot to pick something up off a

When the interior ministry declares its militia to be above the law in terms that equate dissent with treason there really isn’t any question of whether or not we are looking at an authoritarian regime.

I can not think of no other public space or institution in the UK apart from major social media platforms [since football terraces prior to the 1991 legislation] where this type of active protection of unlawful racial slurs would not be challenged, nor even noticed

I agree though I think "algorithm" is better thought of as short-hand for a lot of the features social media have.

Likes providing a running score card for creative meanness, Quotes allowing you to go "get a look at this guy" to all your followers, algo driven discovery/feeds etc.

07.01.2026 12:25 β€” πŸ‘ 48    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Not particularly apropos of anything but:

At some point we are gonna have to face up to the fact we’ve spent most of the last decade blaming β€œthe algorithm” for stuff that’s mostly just human nature and culture.

Contrary to what you may think, I do not care one jot about Starmer's fate. I do care about the number of people who seem to mistake precipitousness for moral clarity and bravado for courage - even in circumstances where getting it wrong might have catastrophic consequences.

It frightens me deeply.

05.01.2026 14:27 β€” πŸ‘ 354    πŸ” 42    πŸ’¬ 36    πŸ“Œ 2

And the reasons for that are not hard to find - Starmer’s unpopularity among left-liberals is the logical, arguably even intended consequence of 18 months of comms and policy which alienates and angers left-liberals while winning over no one on right. This is the cake his team have baked themselves.

Government/Starmer/Reeves' unpopularity isn't so surprising imo.
- pervasive mood of discontent
- voters are increasingly volatile and dealigned from parties
- economic stagnation/cost of living
- polarised/toxic information environment
- weak govt/PM comms
- flawed strategy (alienating core vote)

I might be biased but @jydenham.bsky.social has an excellent substack that I think makes sense of this through the lens of nationhood and the question of who the nation serves. For Reform and now Tories it’s ethnonationalism. Who’s offering a clear, progressive alternative vision of nationhood?

29.12.2025 12:17 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

In the sense that an ideology is just a set of beliefs and values which frame your worldview, I wouldn’t say not having any ideology at all is a good thing. Pretty much all our political parties claim their policies will benefit the majority and yet propose very different solutions.

21.12.2025 13:07 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I’m not knowledgable about European politics but maybe more in the Christian democrat tradition?

21.12.2025 12:59 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Also I think you’re right about his faith. I don’t think his ideology is actually inconsistent, I just don’t think it fits neatly into the boxes we’re used to (Blairite/Soft Left/Old Right etc).

21.12.2025 12:06 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Without getting into the merits or otherwise of his politics, he’s also repeatedly shown a willingness to change his mind when presented with competing evidence or a strong argument. That’s so rare in politics maybe it looks like inconsistency but I think it’s a strength.
