It felt very fitting to pick up right after Foucault's "Discipline and Punish"

Now I'm reading a Lithuanian classic "Dievų Miškas". A collection of memoirs from a classical Lithuanian writer who was incarcerated at the Stutthof concentration camp. The book is notably told in a facetious, comedic tone, grim reality reduced to caricatures as his only means of coping.

I would love to write a long essay on this book because there is far too much to unpack and bsky has far too few characters to do it in a satisfactory way. There is a lot I haven't even mentioned, and even less I've touched on.

These 'parameters' are sorted neatly into dedicated boxes and processed accordingly. Outliers are discarded, destroyed or forced to adjust. It's a very cruelly efficient machine.

And the panoptic structure of these systems is completely invisible, it is impossible to tell what judge is watching.

-use of carceral practices outside of prisons. Schools, hospitals, workplaces, they all utilise methodologies very much derived from the prison as a system. Specifically the objectification of a person enforced by surveilance, a person reduced to their grades, their symptoms, their productivity.

-as a means of mass control and surveilance. There were a lot of ideas I was already familiar with, but they were connected in such a manner that I hadn't spent much time thinking on. I already knew that prisons were exploitative by design, but what I hadn't considered was the wide-spread-

Yesterday I finished Foucault's "Discipline and Punish"! I think, in terms of how much it informed me and enriched me, I would have to place it right next to Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent". Absolutely phenomenal analysis of prisons, punishment, 'rehabilitation'- #nuebooktalk

I forgot to give you an update, but he did finish it in a day. He ended up sharing a lot of my thoughts about how expertly the idea of societal norms is threaded through the story. There is so much to chew on and we stood in the rain for half an hour discussing it, I was so pleased 😊

I recommended The Vegetarian to my coworker and he's been absolutely Enthralled with it, he might actually finish it in a day. Very excited to discuss it with him, so curious to find out what he thinks!!

So I've been working really hard over this week, stressed out of my mind, fixing this problem, re-testing and re-verifying Everything. Fortunately, I have a coworker who I love chatting with when I wait for the bus. We keep exchanging book recommendations and sharing our thoughts about them 🥺

I've been having a really hard time at work due to products breaking in operation at the customers' facilities and finding out that it's been majorly my fault due to a single point of failure that absolutely none of us noticed for two years 💀

That scene made my blood run cold when I realised what was happening, I felt myself going through all the stages of grief even after I had closed the book 😭 I am with you on it being a favourite of mine too

Now I'm reading Michel Foucault's "Discipline and Punish" and it is already a very promising and a very strong start into the history and psychology of punishment

I finished Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" and there is nothing to be said other than that it is a masterpiece and that I beg you to read it #nuebooktalk

I finished it and I will never truly be the same 🥺

I'm also reading Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" right now and, frankly, I don't think I will be able to enjoy any other prose after this

However, I don't think that takes away from the possibility of community and equity. It does not offer answers for the foundation of a perfect society. It cannot offer that. I think that the value of "Utopia" is the opportunity it gives us to examine our world against a fantasy and to do so honestly

-to show that a utopia (which very literally translates to "no place) would rely on humanity ceasing to be human. Pride and envy are inherently human; individuality and uniqueness of character are inseperable from a human being. That is not something we can ever disregard.

So far this month I have read through Thomas More's "Utopia", which was a really interesting piece /because of/ how many people mischaracterise it as an endorsement of communism. In my personal read of it, it is an invitation to examine what we perceive as a given in a society and- #nuebooktalk

Swedish classes! It's two days a week, but it's quite fast paced so there's a lot to do inbetween. It is, however, very nice to see how much I've improved in the short amount of time, structure really does wonders

I've mostly been keeping to myself, enjoying vtubers and reading books. I have very little art to show for it, especially after starting evening classes on top of my job. Everything is a little busy!!
