..... or indeed anything else from what I can see.

The kind of established players they would laud have brought us to where we are.

We need different and better players - @zackpolanski.bsky.social is one of them and I for one am happy to have ditched a failed Labour Party.

I have a lot of time and respect for both @alastaircampbell2.bsky.social and @rory-stewart.bsky.social which is why their response to the interview disappointed and irked in equal measure.

Rachel Reeves could probably recite every number backwards and yet has no concept of business, economy .....

An illegal war by USA & Israel, propped up by missions from UK air bases.

Supported by Nigel Farage.

Over 1000 civilians dead & now the threat of global economic fallout. Trump's disaster makes us all less safe, less secure - and we will remember those who backed it.

I always loved that quarter to six slot before the news.

Hectors House
The Magic Roundabout
The Clangers
Pogle's Wood
Captain Pugwash
Mr Benn

To name but a few :-)

Loved them all

I don't believe these are like rail franchises where you could indeed do just that. The companies own all of the assets outright and don't (as far as I'm aware) operate under license - so unless I'm mistaken, I don't believe we can just withdraw their ability to operate in that way.

Crikey - that's a very thought provoking article that makes a lot of points that I hadn't really considered before.

It's certainly moved my thinking from neutral to firmly against the governments proposals.

Well worth a read.

Iran does not threaten us.

America however does all the time - whether it's tariffs, interference in our domestic politics or now through disruption to global trade.

No one is salivating over anything. We just want out PM to stand up to a bully and are disappointed when he ultimately didn't.

'No' should have been 'no' - not no but if you tell me off then ok.

Polanski has more humanity in his little finger than the whole of this Labour Cabinet put together

PS - renationalising the companies would also end up in the massive debts being written off. Yes the lending banks would take a hit, but that's business and the banks knew the risks. They've also profited for years.

The interest payments can then be reinvested in fixing pipes etc.

09.03.2026 05:17 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

...... prices way above inflation. However, because they are so laden with debt, that in the case of Thames, any extra money put into the business just ends up in interest payments - not investment

I'd have just let them go bust anyway and taken back control an step 1 to renationalising all of them

I think the vast majority of us agree that water privatisation has been a disaster because it's delivered very little by way of investment in infrastructure - for example no new reservoirs. Only now is the govt trying to force co's to invest, so they're responding by jacking up ........

The visit should be cancelled.

We are only told what people want us to know ... and then only what our news organisations will report

The BBC is no longer an independent reliable source (as it once was), so you have to look around and triangulate across a number of sources if you want a reasonable view of what's really happening

08.03.2026 22:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

PR is fine and I'm all for it ..... but I don't see how that guarantees independence for the BBC.

08.03.2026 22:39 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think you're missing the point ....... it doesn't matter whether the water companies are in public ownership or private, we are paying one way or the other (because they will negotiate a subsidy). So my argument is that if I have to pay, I might as well own the damn thing

08.03.2026 22:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Do you honestly think the private companies are going to cough up for fixing all of our crumbing infrastructure ? We will have to pay for it anyway ....... no matter what.

08.03.2026 21:40 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

They aren't in administration that's true -
But their balance sheets also don't record the full liabilities for fixing the infrastructure they are obliged to do - do that and they will all be technically insolvent

08.03.2026 21:17 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

..... infrastructure we have, you could be forgiven for wondering why the government would want that albatross round its neck.

But inasmuch as we are going to end up paying for it all anyway, I struggle to see why the public should subsidise a private enterprise and line shareholders pockets.

08.03.2026 19:41 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But therein lies the issue.

Labours framing of the problem says we cannot renationalise the water companies because we couldn't afford the cost.

It's a false argument as the water companies are worth nothing - so renationalising them will cost nothing.

Given the state of the .......
