I went to the protest in Highland Park, St. Paul. There was good crowd energy and signs including ’No Kings’ and’The Vocal Minority Does Not Speak For Me.’ Let’s do this again.

Minnesota voters elected a split state House. Republicans seized power anyway. Even when Republicans have a lot of power, it often will not be enough,

"The rules governing the exercise of power in a representative democracy should not β€” must not β€” be Calvinball." The MNGOP illegally seizes power in the statehouse. It's part of a pattern. From MSNBC.

Sometime in the 11th Century, viking mercenaries carved runes in the shoulder of this ancient Greek lion statue. It’s difficult to translate, but they say something like β€œWe won and now we’re carving trash talk on your lion.” So at least some vikings knew what lions were. [5/9]

It wasn’t very well attended. I think it was right after spring break in 1999. He got all the students up on stage and had them learn Monk’s β€œFriday the 13th” by ear. Roswell Rudd did a long spoken word thing in one of the tunes they played.

No it was the quartet with Roswell Rudd. I found out they were coming to the Dakota and contacted their management. A student asked about free playing. Lacy said we don’t play totally free anymore but let’s do it today! I have the recording, some great Monk tunes too.

I was lucky enough to be able to get Steve Lacy and his quartet to come to Macalester to do a performance and workshop for the music students. Hard to believe it was 25 years ago.

I’m sad to hear that the great musician Roy Haynes has passed on, but grateful that he lived such a long creative life and left such a rich recorded legacy. What an inspiration.
