So, I’m thankful for the humans and models that are helping me to catalogue my field’s history.

Right now, papers are being published faster than they can be read. That limits fields’ ability to build off of new findings or to link new ideas with their older foundations.

But if we want to ask big questions, or new questions, or old questions but in search of new answers, then we have to innovate.

When he said it’d be faster if I just screened the work instead of “trying to teach computers how to read,” I felt like it was time to bring out the napkins.

My project doesn’t use LLM for screening, but it does use machine learning approaches that people are understandably skeptical of.

I was spurred to look at the math after my son, who is ten, told me I had been working on this project “forever” and “for like two months.”

I didn’t have the heart to correct him that I had been working on this for a few years.

For a single person to screen that many docs, “by hand,” I believe I estimated that it would be around 15 years of full time work.

*The “napkins” aren’t in front of me, so this is from memory.

I think the estimate for slow readers was three times that count.

On the last point, I did some napkin math. Taking reading times into consideration, it’d take a team of 492 fast readers working long shifts to get the same amount of research documents screened in a weekend.

There are more fun things to do with 492 friends on a weekend.

This weekend:

I watched UNC beat Duke with my wife and son.

I watched the Super Bowl (while working to finish this dissertation).

I used a semi-automated approach to screen 944,000 research documents.

This idea lacks merit.

It has always felt like a show of force, or mastery, to me.

And for some reason, that doesn’t appealing to some of us.

I’d rather see whatever was there before.

There’s also an element of faux natural to it, that’s just… Vegas or Disney but without owning that it’s a replica. That part too.
