No animal was caught and killed just for our study on vision in the Greenland shark, and that all our research has been done under all necessary ethical permits and clearances. We want to contribute to the understanding of this enigmatic and endangered species to improve their conservation.

they NEVER kill these animals to get eyeballs! These animals were caught in nets by accident and they were half-eaten and/or dead already. Every living shark is measured only and released back.

I share your concern about killing animals for unnecessary research. These animals are not killed FOR research; when they die for other reasons, scientists try to use the material so the death isn’t wasted.

Finally out! We studied the retinas of the longest-living vertebrate, the Greenland shark, and found that the retinas remain remarkably healthy in animals around 150 years old. What is the mechanism? It may be a highly efficient DNA repair system. Enjoy!
