Scientist, artist, naive believer that there is still some kind in humankind. Biochemistry is life. Neuromelanin is functional in human brain, and so are glutamate polymers. We call the latter 'chlorophyll' in plants. DNA is mitochondrial poop. Fight me.

These turned out alright! Wood and dyed acrylic epoxy polymer. Goofing around with some ideas. Desperately trying to maintain some measure of sanity.

The Suicide of American Conservatism American conservatism is largely an intellectual corpse, killed by people who claim to be conservatives.

This is not a test. We repeat, this is NOT a test.

Anyway, that's a small introduction to me and what I've been thinking about for the last 20+ years. I intend to keep my bsky account positive and leave my political protests on Zuck's sinking ship. You'll see my art and any science I find interesting and notable. (5/5)

Neuromelanin, one of the most overlooked molecules in modern medicine, is not a spectator - PubMed The loss of pigmented neurons from the human brain has long been the hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Neuromelanin (NM) in the pre-synaptic terminal of dopamine neurons is emerging as a primary p...

Again, the big deal here is that the molecules that 'go bad' in these diseases ARE NOT gene products. We'll never find 'a' gene for them, only ~7% of PD cases have a known genetic basis, all related to melanin disposition, mitochondrial dysfunction, or inflammation. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28469642/

These polymers are foreign to the immune system and releasing them triggers inflammation. In PD, melanized dopaminergic neurons leak polymer leading to an autoimmune cascade and eventual diseased state. I'm including a link to my hypothesis paper (>100 citations) on PD. Alzheimer's is similar (3?/?)

Glutamate and dopamine are distinctly different molecules. Yet behave in similar ways. In particular, when you have enough molecules ('monomers'), they react to form polymers--melanin from dopamine, and what we call 'chlorophylls' from glutamate. Both form heme-like, metal binding domains. (2/?)

Why Alzheimer's and Parkinson's mysteries have been so difficult to solve boils down to one simple fact: the deficiency is a pure chemistry one. That is, the molecular process underlying both diseases is a functional macromolecule that is NOT the product of a gene or genes. (1/?)

I got a similar notice on FB for my wood and glass art. I'm ignoring it, the notice is very suspect imho.

(sigh) I retired early from teaching as the pandemic really made it intolerable. I did my best to make a career out of science and want to write my book. But knowing it would just go out into empty space is really discouraging.

Desperately trying to stay sane by keeping busy. There was a hiccup with one of our guest artists for this coming year--a woodworker who I was excited about, turns out was unable to attend the reception. A solution was put forth: Have a 'Three Woodsmen' show, me being one of them. Show idea piece.
