I love Star Wars and writing how I'd fill in the blanks between the ST and OT. I feel like there are many ways to make more sense. I feel like Rian went to some extremes to get us to jump to some conclusions, but that's what a good director does.

Technically, the "Old Republic" could be anywhere before the Empire.... as far as canon goes.
