I recently caught a rerun of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations in the Dominican Republic. One of the folks Tony spoke to talked about how immigrants go to the US to make money to send back to their families because all they want is a comfortable life and the American Dream is really hard to attain

One of the two core belief structures of Republicans is that if you are poor, sick, or otherwise having negative life experiences, it's because you've done something wrong and you need to fix it. This explains a great deal about their policy choices.

This is tied up in the idea that in the United States there are no poor people, there are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires (to quote Steinbeck). The right in the US has done very well in selling the myth of the American Dream, and mostly to the detriment of those dreaming of it.
