obviously this is not universally true and obviously if you are sitting down as an artist trying to make your own comic you bet your ass you have to draw everything yourself BUT if you are sitting there like “literally how was xyz artist able to do all this” the answer is generally that they didn’t

When reading serialized manga I tend to assume all backgrounds were done by assistants, which is a very important thing to keep in mind if you are reading them as an artist, when conceiving of the labor required to produce it

also useful for dealing with background drawing anxieties: the next time you are reading a comic you enjoy try and take note of all the panels or pages with literally no background information at all. you may be surprised what you notice!
