It would have also ensured that tribal youth had legal representation in foster court proceedings. The Governor wanted us to make it contingent on federal approval, so vetoed the bill. AB 1378 was a good bill and it’s an issue we intend to continue to work on.

This year, we partnered with the California Tribal Families Coalition to introduce a bill that would have allowed tribes to partner with the Department of Social Services for preventative services and make them eligible to access federal Family First Prevention Services Act dollars.

Even still, this disparity still exists today. For example, 40% of all youth in the foster care system in Humboldt County are tribal youth.

Unfortunately, the Governor also vetoed one of our most important bills today. Recognizing the history of forced assimilation that saw a disproportionate number of tribal youth taken from their homes and put in foster care, Congress passed the Indian Child Welfare Act in 1978.

Busy and beautiful weekend in Fort Bragg. I caught the last day of Kelpfest and the first annual “Longest table” - breaking bread with the Mayor and Councilmembers, City staff, and 500 neighbors.

Today was the inaugural Many Moons Festival in Sebastopol, a celebration of Asian American, South and Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander cultures!

After five years of hard work Herman Hernandez welcomed his neighbors and agency partners to see his progress. After nearly losing his home in the 2020 Walbridge fire, he has since turned his property into a shaded fuel break and point of defense and resiliency for the entire Guerneville community.

Talking gas prices, Potter Valley, and SMART at the Cloverdale Rotary - big event coming up for them next week with the Asti Tour de Vine.

Kicking off SMART’s reauthorization campaign - so far they have collected 40,000 of the 70,000 signatures they need to qualify the initiative. SMART is setting new records for ridership month after month and has seen the best recovery for post-COVID ridership of any transit agency in the Bay Area.

Happy retirement to Fort Bragg’s Chief of Police Neil Cervenka. For 32 years, he has dedicated his life to public service and Fort Bragg is lucky to have had his leadership.

My favorite thing about our town halls is that each community has different questions or concerns. In Fort Bragg (our 12th town hall this year), much of the conversation was about housing - specifically senior housing - and local rural infrastructure needs.

The Governor signed AB 263! From his press release:

“AB 263 by Assemblymember Chris Rogers (D-Santa Rosa) furthers the state’s promise to protect salmon and salmon habitat in the Klamath River watershed, which has seen dramatic improvement with the removal of dams on the Klamath River.”

Yesterday, Eureka celebrated California Native American Day by cutting the ribbon for the new cultural display case at the Northern California Indian Development Center. The new display case will house cultural items from North Coast Tribes.

I had some company for my zoom today! Enjoyed talking with the Mendocino College Faculty Association and Assemblymember Damon Connolly about Prop 50. After we were done, Ellis kept signing “more” at the screen - I think we have a future social butterfly on our hands.

The bulk of the conversation was definitely around affordability - specifically housing and utilities

Joined the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber advocacy council for a lunchtime discussion about legislative priorities.
