Weโ€™re live at Public Law and the Planet ๐ŸŒ

A sold-out event with 200+ delegates in the room from across civil society, exploring how we can use public law to ensure governments urgently deliver climate justice. Over 60 participants also join the discussion online.

2/ Instead of supporting employment, sanctions are driving hardship, proving disproportionately severe, and operating in ways that are fundamentally unsound.

1/ The UK's benefit sanctions regime is causing harm to those most vulnerable.

In a report published by PLP at the end of last year, drawing on casework from 100+ sanctioned people and analysis of DWP data, we found the #UniversalCredit sanctions system is failing on its own terms.

2/ Trust is undermined when access to justice is restricted, services are under-resourced, and new technologies lack accountability.

Rebuilding confidence means justice must be accessible, visible, and fair. Rights must be practical and enforceable, especially for the most marginalised.

1/ On this World Day of Social Justice, we pay attention to the growing distrust in public institutions.

From a #publiclaw perspective, social justice depends on a strong rule of law that limits government power and gives people real ways to challenge unfair or unlawful decisions.

2/ Five years on since the UK left the EU, almost 80,000 people are still waiting for decisions under the EU Settlement Scheme and risk serious problems, or even refusal of entry, if they travel.

This is unfair and not what the Withdrawal Agreement intended.

International human rights are not the enemy International law can provide a coherent language for articulating victimsโ€™ longstanding claims to truth and justice, says Selbi Durdiyeva.

What does the Hillsborough Law have to do with international #humanrights?

The principles behind the duty of candour are international human rights obligations. Hillsborough shows what happens when they are ignored.

2/ For many people this means delayed help, rising costs and unlawful decisions going unchallenged.

Government drops plans for mandatory digital ID to work in UK There will still be digital checks on those starting a new job, but people will not need to hold a digital ID.

The governmentโ€™s U-turn on its digital IDs to work is a welcome move, but action is needed on existing schemes.

Experience of the EU Settlement Scheme's digital-only visa underscores the urgent need for review of such systems to ensure genuine accessibility.

Costs: investigating โ€˜public lawโ€™s disgraceโ€™ Judicial review can be very expensive for all parties โ€“ and at a scale that puts it out of reach for most people and organisations, says Lee Marsons.

3/3 We need a better approach that makes judicial review fair, accessible, and workable for everyone: claimants, public bodies, and interveners alike.

2/3 Despite judicial reviewโ€™s importance for accountability and the rule of law, the government has reportedly been looking for ways to limit UK obligations, for example via the Aarhus Convention โ€” a treaty designed to protect environmental claimants from crushing legal costs.

1/3 Judicial review is meant to help people challenge unlawful decisions by public bodies.

But today, itโ€™s simply too expensive for most. PLP research from 2019 found that an average case can cost ยฃ30,000+. Today it is likely to be more costly. This puts justice out of reach for many.
