Yeah it's one of those funny things because it got 2 million players off the back of that funny reveal. Those are numbers most multiplayer games would be stoked to launch with, and if it had a low-key reveal it likely wouldn't've memed itself into those numbers. Who knows

there's so many angles to talk about Highguard. It had a spicy launch and you can get absorbed in lots of online narratives on it because they can hold a lot of truth, but I dunno... it was just a whatever, poorly managed, poorly planned game at the end of the day

the gaming social media lanscape is awful but I keep seeing takes blaming the "hate" for Highguard's shuttering when I think it was clearly a mix of bad corporate management and about 2mil people finding the game a tad boring. I even liked my time with it but I didn't keep playing after 3 matches

been playing a bunch of Ridge Racer 1 lately (just beat all difficulties) and it's so delightful that this series was cool as fuck from day 1. Just a killer soundtrack and aesthetic that hits just as hard 33 odd years on. Bring it back

Like those are numbers devs would kill for right? They had an audience ready to go and just botched the whole thing. Gamers often don't know what they want but in this case maybe EA really should've just made the video game people had been asking for for the last 15 years, not this live service shit

EA Skate's dev just announced "changes to (their) team structure" which is as sad as it is unsurprising. I try not to over-analyse player counts but I can't stop thinking about how they once celebrated that they had over 15 million unique players. People REALLY wanted to like this game but alas

Indie games are very rad and need more eyes, but AAA games aren't worthless. They're built with talent, production value is something that can be enjoyed, and I think my work/posts online have always spoken to finding artistry in projects that seem like cynical movie-tie ins/cash grabs or whatever
