I hope my posts here didn't sound too condescending and I won't pretend I know what the small YouTuber experience is anymore. I guess in my experience I've found that YouTube is a machine incidentally designed to burn out creatives, and I've found far more happiness in letting go of the chase

And hey maybe my takeaway from this talk should be to come back to YouTube and make the exact videos I want to make, and there's a fair chance I will do that someday (I generally tried to), but right now exactly what I want to make simply isn't YouTube videos

Also funny is when he mentioned he made the most money in a year on YouTube when he only released 2 videos - I quit YouTube last December and made more money in that financial year than I did the year before. To my eye there's no point playing the content game because it makes no sense anyway

Really great and relatable talk from old mate Jim here about why creative's should make they want to make.
Don't let an algorithm decide what you do, don't let an audience decide what you do, don't let "industry advice" decide what you do, just make shit you think is cool and fun to make

spot on, I think when games have hype cycles they're always critiqued for what they're not rather than what they are, and it's good to re-evaluate them when the dust settles a bit

i actually do kind of find the "10 year old thing is actually good" thing to be a bit cliche, but like- I simply enjoyed a video game lol. Also fun is how the older a game is, the less riled up people get. me liking Driv3r bothers no one, me liking Saints Row 2022 ruffles lots of feathers. gaming

i have been informed me liking The Order 1886 is "youtuber revisionism" and that is dead accurate. im a part of a secret cabal of youtubers working hard daily to rewrite history on bad video games. the main case ive been assigned is Driv3r and i've been working it for years. fighting the good fight

definitely something in that, and I think I probably enjoyed it more now than I would've then because this genre has dried up a lot
30.10.2025 02:14 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
The Order 1886 has the vibe of a game that got cancelled and the concept art gets released on reddit and all the business 101 redditors comment things like "i can see why this got cancelled" but it actually released
30.10.2025 01:26 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
final thought - The Order feels especially confident and cool to me because it's not begging you to like it. It's just going for a certain thing, and if you don't like it so be it, which is unusual for a 2010s huge budget cinematic third person shooter. Especially unusual for a Sony game lol
30.10.2025 01:20 β π 11 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
again I can see why someone would hate this. If you don't buy-in, it's easy to see these characters as dull/dry, and the clunky gameplay and QTEs will be harder to stomach. But if it clicks it's a pretty unique experience (with not-unique gameplay). this entire thread was an excuse to drive-by Skate
30.10.2025 01:17 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
It feels like a game that treats you like an adult I guess, like it doesn't waste your time (lockpicking mini games aside lol) and there's something about it's leads being old crotchety brits that aligns with this. They aren't peppy or charismatic, just grumps trying to get through their jobs
30.10.2025 01:17 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0
I find the world building and storytelling to be especially mature and trusting of the player, a lot of AAA blockbuster storytelling repeats plot points ad nauseam to make sure you get it but The Order does a really good job of trusting that you're paying attention and rewarding you if you are
30.10.2025 01:17 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
almost finished The Order 1886 and it's definitely won me over but I totally get why someone would hate this game lol. So many QTEs
I think especially after playing Skate it's nice to play a game that is so confident in itself and its aesthetic, and I love the ambition even if it goes unrealised

oh dear. I realised yesterday when playing the order 1886 that i groaned when a lockpicking minigame tutorial appeared lol. i think i would've sighed in relief if it was a progress bar or just an animation
27.10.2025 02:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
i just reckon they're pretty much always such time wasters. it's extra goofy when they pause a stealth game to let you do the minigame. like isn't the whole idea that i'm trying to sneakily pick this lock quickly so i don't get caught. what are we doing
27.10.2025 02:29 β π 11 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0
they should make lockpicking minigames illegal and retroactively replace all of them in already released games with simple progress bars. P.S. i am not a crackpot
27.10.2025 02:24 β π 27 π 2 π¬ 5 π 0
yeah i'd be keen to hear it
27.10.2025 01:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
I've only just started it and it's certainly a clunky game, I don't think it needs the 10ish year later reappraisal you see a lot of big games get, but there's something behind it that has me wanting to like it. I'll see how I go. Always a bit of fun going back to a high profile 'disappointment'
26.10.2025 00:27 β π 31 π 0 π¬ 5 π 0
I started playing The Order 1886 and I'm really enjoying how self-serious to a fault it is. It's quite a silly game on paper being a steampunk victorian werewolf game, but it's compelling in just how hard it commits to turning that into something stylish and melodramatic
26.10.2025 00:27 β π 58 π 0 π¬ 5 π 0

It's less "look how far we've come" and more "look what we lost."
15~ people made a game with a singular vibe and control innovations that changed the industry and now a production anywhere between 10x-20x the size exists solely to reanimate its corpse as one of the last few commercial safe bets.
