I’m grateful to my family who have been caring for me, friends and acquaintances who have checked in on me, colleagues who sent flowers and brought lunch, and doctor friends who’ve generously shared advice. I know I’m very lucky. But today as the initial rush has worn off, I’m just sad & angry. 2/

I’m feeling very sorry for myself today. It doesn’t feel fair that I’m sitting at home in a great deal of pain with a shattered wrist, waiting another week for surgery, while the guy who did this to me is out there just living his life, probably barely giving me a second thought. 1/

Vancouver safe street advocate hit by car on way home from advocacy meeting
Rhiannon Fox, a vocal advocate for safer streets, was left with a broken wrist last week after a driver tried to overtake her on the left while she turned left on an e-scooter in Vancouver.
"The crash highlights an unsettling truth about the city: despite its bike-friendly reputation and mild climate, recent years have seen Vancouver fall behind peers such as Montreal or Edmonton in making its streets safer [especially outside the downtown core]."

This wasn’t an accident. Like most urban crashes, it was the predictable result of governments’ failure to act on known problems; it is a reflection of our society’s priorities. We can do better. I didn’t deserve this and neither do the thousands of others injured or killed on our streets. 5/

Despite this being a residential side street, the speed limit is a deadly 50kph, the default throughout Vancouver and all other BC municipalities. Why? Because the Province will not allow cities to set their own default limits. 4/

The City knew this street was problematic - I’ve reported it at least four times, witnessed multiple crashes, and nothing was done. But this street isn’t unique either; traffic safety is terribly underfunded, vehicle speed is prioritized over people, & enforcement is nonexistent. 3/

I was following all rules of the road, had the right of way, and was wearing bright clothes and helmet. I’m angry at the driver, who broke multiple laws and then tried to deflect responsibility. But I’m angrier at the system that allows this to happen again and again. 2/

On Friday, on my way home from a workshop at City Hall on the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan (!!), I was hit by a driver on my own street. I have a badly broken wrist that will likely require surgery, and face a long recovery during which I’ll struggle to fulfil my parenting and work duties. 1/

Only when I’m asleep, showering, or in a meeting with headphones in. But I’m in a pretty quiet part of town.

Make a Change. Sign this Petition.
Restore the After School 99 Bus at Pentiction St
TransLink recently canceled a couple of buses that hundreds of high school students rely on to get home every day, leaving them waiting longer in the cold and cramming unsafely onto remaining buses. Please sign this petition demanding the route be restored! c.org/YJd9whVDF6

I forgot to mention that people in my neighbourhood Facebook group are mobilizing against bus lanes, with the justification that *shudder* it would reduce on-street parking. So it’s important they hear from 🚎 supporters too! Please fill out the survey. survey.vancouver.ca/s3/Hastings-...

Points worth sharing:
• Bus lanes are most urgently needed west of Renfrew, where delays are worst
• Hastings buses serve thousands of riders daily - students, families, workers - & they shouldn’t have to be stuck in traffic
• Better transit is essential with the new PNE venue coming online

Agreed. Kennedy Stewart has apparently floated the idea of running again, which would be absolutely infuriating if it came to pass.

If you want a mayor who will unseat Ken Sim and help usher in bold, progressive leadership for Vancouver, consider becoming a OneCity member before January 11 and voting in the nomination. This is how change starts. 4/ www.onecityvancouver.ca/membership_c...

He’s also deeply committed to reducing car dependence. Through his leadership at Modo car co-op, of which I'm a longtime member, he’s helped advance practical alternatives to car ownership. He cares about street safety and seems eager to learn more about how systems can better protect people. 3/

I'll be voting for William Azaroff. One big reason: he's a serious housing, climate, & environmental health champion. He's been a leader on getting gas out of buildings, the unglamorous but essential work of cutting emissions and protecting public health. 2/

A little animation pops up of driving down a road, and you have to click on a stop sign as soon as it appears. It measures reaction time. This is the first time I’ve seen it, but I’ve only been using Lime for about a month and rarely so late in the evening.
