This was our last car too. Our crowning achievement was taking it on a weeklong camping trip with me, my 6β4β husband, 2 kids including 1 in a car seat, and a freaking cargo bike inside the car. Such a great car!

My cats killed off all my houseplants one by one, so I donβt have to worry about this. π

In the foreground, an arm in a cast with writing on it reading βtraffic calming nowβ. Behind, a living room window looking out on what should be a quiet side street but instead is a shortcut for rat-running drivers trying to avoid traffic lights on the adjacent arterial street.
4:30pm, two weeks after being hit by a driver half a block from my house, & Iβm sitting here nursing my broken wrist while watching a constant stream of rat-running drivers speeding down my residential side street. Maybe someday weβll get some traffic calming. π₯²

Iβm grateful to my family who have been caring for me, friends and acquaintances who have checked in on me, colleagues who sent flowers and brought lunch, and doctor friends whoβve generously shared advice. I know Iβm very lucky. But today as the initial rush has worn off, Iβm just sad & angry. 2/

Iβm feeling very sorry for myself today. It doesnβt feel fair that Iβm sitting at home in a great deal of pain with a shattered wrist, waiting another week for surgery, while the guy who did this to me is out there just living his life, probably barely giving me a second thought. 1/

Vancouver safe street advocate hit by car on way home from advocacy meeting
Rhiannon Fox, a vocal advocate for safer streets, was left with a broken wrist last week after a driver tried to overtake her on the left while she turned left on an e-scooter in Vancouver.
"The crash highlights an unsettling truth about the city: despite its bike-friendly reputation and mild climate, recent years have seen Vancouver fall behind peers such as Montreal or Edmonton in making its streets safer [especially outside the downtown core]."

This wasnβt an accident. Like most urban crashes, it was the predictable result of governmentsβ failure to act on known problems; it is a reflection of our societyβs priorities. We can do better. I didnβt deserve this and neither do the thousands of others injured or killed on our streets. 5/

Despite this being a residential side street, the speed limit is a deadly 50kph, the default throughout Vancouver and all other BC municipalities. Why? Because the Province will not allow cities to set their own default limits. 4/

The City knew this street was problematic - Iβve reported it at least four times, witnessed multiple crashes, and nothing was done. But this street isnβt unique either; traffic safety is terribly underfunded, vehicle speed is prioritized over people, & enforcement is nonexistent. 3/

I was following all rules of the road, had the right of way, and was wearing bright clothes and helmet. Iβm angry at the driver, who broke multiple laws and then tried to deflect responsibility. But Iβm angrier at the system that allows this to happen again and again. 2/

On Friday, on my way home from a workshop at City Hall on the Cityβs Vision Zero Action Plan (!!), I was hit by a driver on my own street. I have a badly broken wrist that will likely require surgery, and face a long recovery during which Iβll struggle to fulfil my parenting and work duties. 1/

Make a Change. Sign this Petition.
Restore the After School 99 Bus at Pentiction St
TransLink recently canceled a couple of buses that hundreds of high school students rely on to get home every day, leaving them waiting longer in the cold and cramming unsafely onto remaining buses. Please sign this petition demanding the route be restored! c.org/YJd9whVDF6

I forgot to mention that people in my neighbourhood Facebook group are mobilizing against bus lanes, with the justification that *shudder* it would reduce on-street parking. So itβs important they hear from π supporters too! Please fill out the survey. survey.vancouver.ca/s3/Hastings-...

Points worth sharing:
β’ Bus lanes are most urgently needed west of Renfrew, where delays are worst
β’ Hastings buses serve thousands of riders daily - students, families, workers - & they shouldnβt have to be stuck in traffic
β’ Better transit is essential with the new PNE venue coming online

Agreed. Kennedy Stewart has apparently floated the idea of running again, which would be absolutely infuriating if it came to pass.
