Framed 16th century oil painting showing an older man holding some papers and a large book, with a younger large bearded man standing behind him. Both subjects are looking straight at the viewer

Fond of this painting in the National Gallery - a portrait of Giovanni Agostino della Torre and his son NiccolΓ², by Lorenzo Lotto, not least because it looks like a Christmas day video call with your dad and your brother.

TOO MUCH FOR HIM.

A remarkable attempt is recalled which was inspired by Captain Barclay's feat of walking a thousand miles in a thousand hours. A gallant sportsman backed himself to eat a thousand sausages in a thousand hours. He laid in a supply of sausage-meat, and engaged cooks to make it up and watchmen to call him every hour of every night for six weeks. But the bout of linked sweetness was not very long drawn out. The sportsman's eyes had been much larger than his stomach, and he gave up at the third sausage.

At the time they thought it would kill you, but it's probably not so bad. In the wake of this though I read someone attempted to eat one sausage per hour for 1000 hours and I reckon that would be horrific

That gave him the opportunity to have his second beer of the morning.
