I love a good redemption! My next book is about two minor villains finding a happy ending.

But I have never, and will never write a story that ends in some kind of hand-wave happy ending between an knowing, intentional oppressor and the victims of their hate.

These girls have suffered under the weight of unjust laws, and at the hands of oppressors.

Luella hurt a man who was trying to steal her identity through abuse and she's not sorry for it.

Billie Mae and Loretta are Black in 1930's Mississippi, they know the risk of danger they face every day.

To stave off 'but what about' comments, yes, I love a fictional villain redemption arc as much as anyone. That's not what I'm talking about and y'all know it.

In BROOMS, it is never suggested that the girls try to make nice with the racist white boys who try to do them harm.

That was intentional.

It's something I see a lot in media for young audiences as well, and while I am all for learning to overcome differences to become friends, the idea that a person can't truly heal unless they reach a hand out to the person who knowingly, intentionally, and guiltlessly did them harm is, imo, garbage.

Most folks who have heard me talk know that I wrote BROOMS (witchy, queer 1930's illegal broom racing) partly because I was tired of euro-centric white magical academia stories

But I also had some grievances with Southern 'forgive those who hurt you' narratives 🧵

But maybe she needs to be convinced by concrete alternatives more than anything. That and evidence that it works/appeals to people.
