Another great paper from @pawelburkhardt.bsky.social about the subepithelial nerve net (SNN) in ctenophores: it forms synaptic connections with effector cells (some 17 cell types). The signal processing within the aboral organ relies on synaptic and nonsynaptic communication.

Even more excited — our paper is featured on the cover of Science Advances!

Huge thanks to @alexandrejan.bsky.social who took this incredible photo of a ctenophore (aka comb jelly) and the editors.

Here’s the cover 👇

Another great article by @mastroianni.bsky.social on the current #SciencePublishing system.

Don't publish with for-profit publishers like Elsevier, Springer Nature, et al. It's really simple. There are so many cool #PlantScience society journals. #SciPub

Wee thread 🧵⬇️ on our new #glycotime with @siglecdude.bsky.social John Klassen and @glycocode.bsky.social 🥳 where we show Siglecs as molecular precision tools, able to recognise sialylated glycans with surgical precision in their natural environment, not bad for a lectin! 😎

B4GALNT3, an enzyme that synthesizes GalNAcβ1-4GlcNAc, contains a unique non-catalytic PA14 domain, which is a lectin domain recognizing sulfated glycans (eg. Gal[6S]β1-4GlcNAc[6S]). Such sulfated glycans negatively regulate the PA14-dependent catalytic activity.

Thank you, Anne! No, but I plan to write a piece. It is puzzling why E. granulosus has chosen Gal alpha1-4 Gal to cover its mucins, despite some humans (of P2 blood group) produce them in small amounts.

Ten Dobrowolny Upowszechniacz przerabiał Indiotów na lśniące krążki, z których potem czarne automaty układały piękne wzory. W zasadzie to też pasuje, bo w końcu wszyscy wyglądali tak samo.

Now this is big: under freezing conditions, a small polymerase ribozyme called Q45 can synthesize itself and its complementary strand. It seems that life might have started in the cold: Earth’s natural freeze-thaw cycles may have helped concentrate life’s building blocks.
