Statement by Peter George in response to inquiries about MPs wages
The Mercury: We're contacting all parliamentarians to ask if they accepted the pay rise or rejected it. Alongside the article, weโ€™re publishing a list of everyone and putting each politician in one of three columns - โ€˜acceptedโ€™, โ€˜declinedโ€™, or โ€˜did not/refused to commentโ€™, depending on how they answer our query.

What MPs do with the wage rise is entirely a matter for each individual MP.
I have accepted the wage rise.
While this should remain an entirely private matter, I will make this clear just once:
My wife and I agreed when elected in July 2025 to tithe a percentage of the MPsโ€™ wage to good community causes.
We intend to direct the additional wage to the same and/or other community causes.
I have no intention of giving it back to a government prepared to squander public monies on an unnecessary stadium.

Itโ€™s been a long time coming but at last some movement on making Tasmaniaโ€™s government and its decision making more transparent and accountable. Last week we saw the report on our Right to Information and it was pretty damning. Its recommendations for change will be hard for the government to resist

Now is the time to go back to the AFL and say we deserve a team but we do not deserve to be driven into state bankruptcy by your demands.

The Tasmanian planning commission has come out with a very clear verdict on the Macquarie point Stadium. Itโ€™s not in the right place, it doesnโ€™t come at the right cost and it will be an imposition on future generations as the costs of running the place mount. 1/2

A mea culpa today, Iโ€™m sorry to say.
But if you set out to be transparent as an MP, you have to admit your failings while claiming your successes.

I met with members of the Leslie Vale Community Group tackling real community issues - the dangerous intersection where Leslie Vale Road intersects with the Huon Highway, blasts from the nearby blue metal quarry, foot tracks & a planned mobile phone tower.

Lone MPs have little influence over such decisions but Iโ€™m already getting angry and distressed messages from people who admire - and benefited from - Rotorliftโ€™s quarter century of rescue operations in difficult terrain and dangerous conditions.

Tasmaniaโ€™s locally owned helicopter rescue service, Rotorlift, has lost its bid for a new $350million 10-year contract to a mainland company.
I met owner, Allana Corbin, a week ago raising issues with the tender process that she felt unfairly discriminated against Rotorlift.

Still, now thatโ€™s all behind us thereโ€™s a very willing cross bench determined to make this parliamentary term effective, collaborative โ€ฆ and survive four years.
I reckon one thing we should really push for is a mandatory, legislated four-year term! 3/3 #politas

of the cross bench voted with Labor whose MPs looked lonely and dispirited when a division was called and they stood alone.
Just about every cross bencher made it clear that voting against Labor didnโ€™t mean there was much (if any) confidence in the Liberals of Jeremy Rockliff.

What might have been a long day in Parliament with high drama over Laborโ€™s motion for a no confidence motion in Jeremy Rockliffโ€™s Liberals turned out to be something of a damp squib.
You might think thatโ€™s a good thing.
Labor lost the motion overwhelmingly when not one member 1/5

The Liberals are home and hosed.
Laborโ€™s no-confidence motion against the Rockliff government will fail, pre-determined by five Greens announcing they wonโ€™t support it.
This is more to do with Laborโ€™s ineptitude in abysmally failing to work towards genuine compromise and collaboration than anything.

watching on but globally, minority government discussions and negotiations can go on for weeks if not months - and in one case almost 2 years! In 2018 Sweden took 131 days! Belgium once took 652 days and the sky didnโ€™t fall! End.

Discussion continue with Liberal and Labor party leaders over the policies theyโ€™ll pursue if they take the reins of government next week. This evening it was Laborโ€™s Dean Winter talking to the whole cross bench about policy issues of concern. It may seem all very slow and tedious if youโ€™re 1/3

Some signs of hope today that the Liberals have grasped the nettle of working as a minority government when caretaker Treasurer, Eric Abetz, convened a meeting with cross benchers to discuss collaboration in getting the state out of the ever increasing budget black hole.

Give and take is what minority government is all about.
So good signs of progress but both the old parties will still have to show greater trustworthiness and goodwill than they have in the past to win over the cross bench.

as Treasurer has blossomed into reality. Labor says itโ€™ll appoint Ruth if it takes power in a parliamentary confidence motion on August 19.
Meanwhile the Libs are promising to end the subsidies for greyhound racing by 2029 and to reverse their plans to expand native forest logging.
