+ Cuba continues to nationalize all other US owned businesses operating in Cuba.

+ In 1961, US launches the Bay of Pigs operation and fails to remove Castro. It is a national embarrassment for the US. CIA involvement hidden until 1990s.

+ In 1953 - 1959 the Cuban Revolution fights to overthrow Batista, who is supplied w weapons by the US govt.

+ Jan 1, 1959 Cuban Revolution overthrows Batista. Fidel Castro is sworn in as PM.

+ In 1960 Cuba nationalized US-owned oil refineries bc US govt urged them to refuse to refine USSR oil.

Why the US really embargoed Cuba

+ In 1952 the US govt, business oligarchs, & the Mafia support Batista's coup to establish a brutal & corrupt dictatorship.

+ 1952 - 1958 widespread corruption (US owned 70% of arable land), brutal repression, torture, & extrajudicial killings creates a revolution.
