There have also been a LOT of instances where a story just strides right past the fact that an adult or a much older character is flirting with or behaving inappropriately with a child. I've paused so many shows to look at my kid and go "NOT ok for an adult to act like that with someone that age!"

FTR: I do not endorse watching Hocus Pocus. Not because it made a 7yo ask me what a virgin was, but because it sucked. No amount of drum solos could convince me that kid was cool.

It sucked to explain to a 7yr old why characters in Hocus Pocus were ripping on a boy for being a Virgin, but I did it. My kid got an age-appropriate answer that also contextualized why mocking someone for it was rude and being embarrassed about it was unnecessary. Took less than 5min.

As a studio executive, making that decision means you're more afraid of upsetting homophobic audiences than you are of losing inclusive talent. By the numbers, you bank on throwing the smallest possible demographic under the bus. I understand the motivation, but I also understand that it sucks.

The Owl House was wholesome as hell. Nobody was making references to how anyone might fuck, but characters who didn't respect others' consent or autonomy WERE the bad guys. That isn't "forcing" a conversation. It was about people finding out what made them happy.

You don't have to explain anything that ain't age appropriate but if it's ok to know about boys and girls who want to hold hands or kiss then it's just __-phobic to get mad about a character who is capable of getting little hearts around their head for a character of the same or undefined gender.

Pretending that hard conversations can be avoided or put off all but guarantees you'll get blindsided by them. Or left out of them entirely. So if it matters to you, do it. Those questions don't go away just because you said, "I'll explain when you're older."

My kid grew up with Santa's Husband, The Owl House, Adventure Time, She-Ra, Frog and Toad, Mommy, Mama, and me, etc.
It isn't subversive unless you believe it's wrong, and if you do, quit being a weiner and own it. That might have consequences for you or them down the road but that's life.

If it's the former, there are tons of great kid-appropriate resources! If it's the latter, you need to unpack why you're afraid for your kid to know this about you.

Why are queer people an uncomfortable conversation for you as a parent? Because you don't know enough to do it well, or because it means having to tell your kid that you're upset that queer characters exist or might be happy?

- slut shaming
- eating disorders
- why police don't get in trouble for lying to or killing people
- sex work
- sexual assault
