Thanks! Yes, I do. I haven’t updated my portfolio site to include these recent works, but they are available.

Completed this painting recently. I've transitioned to a mode of art making where I create computer algorithms that generate images, which I then paint by hand. I find mapping rigid computer-based processes to the messy real world to be extremely satisfying.

This is the third painting that I’ve done in this fashion, and each one had helped me lease how I can do things better, or adjust my approach to encourage certain types of results. If I could get my shit together (unlikely, lol) I’d create a video montage that shows the progression. πŸ™πŸ»

I do a lot of pre-painting analysis and adjustment with the source SVG to figure out the optimal order to proceed. This is when I take paint transparency into consideration, etc.

I posted a WIP photo a moment ago which shows how I approach it. Since this is all my code I’ve written tools that generate guides on the edges, based on which layers I will be painting. I then plot those onto tape and use a ruler to mask out each layer by hand.

An in-progress photo of a painting in which yellow masking tape is being used to block out sections that will be painted. There are a variety of other tools scattered on the table around it, including scissors, a ruler, and various tubes of acrylic paint and bottles of medium.

I use a combination of tools, but tape is my biggest friend. I like to put guidelines on the edges and then use a ruler to place the tape. It’s a bit of a process, for sure.

Plus, the mental process of painting is so completely distinct from that of programming that every work is a new exploration of what I can do better, from both the programming side as well figuring out ways to really elevate the medium (a thing I didn't think about a lot as a digital artist, tbh).

A bamboo desk with five small works of art on them, each 63mm x 88mm. They are in black and yellow, and the artwork is abstract line work based on a recursive algorithm that subdivides space in a regular way. The results are reminiscent of technical drawings. There are three Rotring Isograph pens on the left side of the trading cards, and two bottles of ink above them.

Made some "art trading cards" for an upcoming end-of-term art club party at my local community college (where I've been taking painting classes).

Looking forward to seeing what other folks bring - I'm the only person making such aggressively abstract work. πŸ˜…

A ghostlike image of swirling paths moving through space and overlapping one another, in a similar but not identical pattern. Grayish-blue against a black background.

Thank you! Unfortunately I don’t really know as this plot completed at night and was left untouched until the morning. By then everything was dry. Not sure about requiring a fixative for longer-term, though. Totally new to Yupo (it was a gift) so I’ll have to look into it.

I usually run fine Rotrings (<= 0.2mm?) around 15 or 20 in the AxiDraw settings in Inkscape. In this case, however, the Yupo is so slick that I was able to turn the speed up to 40 and everything still worked very well.

AxiDraw SE/A3
9"x12" Yupo paper
0.1mm Rotring Isograph
Back DeAtramentis Document Ink
Plot time: ~4 hours

A photo of a pen plot of a physics simulation gone wrong. There are many overlapping black lines that seem to move chaotically across the page, while darker regions seem to form an abstract pattern of loops and curves.

I spent yesterday plotting this very detailed image. Regular paper didn't hold up to the image's many overlapping strokes unless I used a ballpoint, which shed ink in a distracting way.

In the end, Yupo paper provided the best result. Amazing detail/tonal gradation. πŸ”₯

πŸ™πŸ» I was playing with XPBD to simulate a pulled stand of beads. This simulation actually works well, but in this case I had run it with too large a time step and forces that were incorrectly set.
