Young men more likely to vote Green than Reform. Young men second most progressive group of any demographic. Combined right-wing vote barely bigger than Green vote alone for young men

A nation is a shared illusion – so a government has the power to change it Also this week: who was the first king of England? And my favourite giant semi-aquatic rat.

"Almost no one will have knowingly encountered someone who illegally entered the country, let alone seen them actually arrive on the beach at Dover. They just think there’s a crisis because other people keep telling them there is."

If I were trying to win elections and arguments, I simply would be doing everything I could to move UK political conversation away from a website run by an avowed enemy who believes and writes this stuff about me:

The failure of the government and many Labour MPs to leave X after the 2024 riots suggests they just don't get the challenge they face or the power they have to fight back. Completely weak and callow.

Starmer could have said:

Vandalism isn't patriotism; daubing red crosses on Chinese takeaways and writing racist graffiti isn't patriotism; perfomatively sitting in front of a flag or tying one to a mosque isn't patriotism;

Patriotism is about making this country safe, happy productive for all.

Again, there was absolutely no need to take an evil decision, and yet this UK Government took an evil decision. It's just an evil government, I'm sorry, it's an evil government that has declared war on the LGBT community - my community - and I've never despised a government more than I do this one.

is it only asylum seekers our Labour Prime Minister would object to living next to or would the sentiment apply to black and brown people in general? if merely the former, would he like to explain how he knows people he sees, say, in the street, actually are asylum seekers and not citizens?

well on the one hand it's bad for democracy and social cohesion that Keir Starmer is trying to appeal to the racists by pretending to be one of them, but on the other hand it's not actually working and the racists still don't want to vote for him

Got a bunch of new followers after the β€œtrans in the uk” thread I did went viral.

So I’m going to add this. The same Ik government which introduced same sex marriage also introduced a rule where trans people need their spouse’s written permission to change their legal sex.

I want to explain a few things and then it might be clearer why UK trans people are upset.
In 2001 I married my wife, Sylvia.
In 2005 I started medical transition. (1/13)

No Trans+ child deserves to live in fear

But backed by his party, anti-trans activist minister @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social is waging a relentless war on Trans+ youth

After radicalising the NHS with his transphobic ideology, he now appears to be weaponising the police to enforce his extremism

In Gaza, β€˜They’re Prepared to Die for a Bagful of Rice’

So, so shocking:

"since June 1, more than 700 Palestinians have been reported killed, and about 5,000 injured, in almost daily shootings near food distribution sites run under a new aid system backed by Israel and the US, according to the Gaza health ministry." www.nytimes.com/2025/07/09/w...

This is catastrophic for UK journalists trying to use this platform vs Twitter, will kill DMs for most users and make the experience shit for newbies.

All to stop teenagers accessing porn on a site with no teenagers and where the most arousing content is some graphs posted by policy nerds.

Bluesky is rolling out age verification in the UK Bluesky users in the UK can verify their age using their face, ID, or payment card.

Starting July 25, Bluesky will require users in the UK to scan their face, upload an ID or verify their identity with a bankcard.

I realize that platforms feel they have no choice but to comply with the government surveillance schemes, but shocking nonetheless.

I'm assuming that households with foreign nationals will be able to stop paying National Insurance then? This is the most vile, and also most illogical, anti-immigration policy I've seen in a good while, and that's saying something in this climate.

There will be other factors in the story too. Maybe other reasons for stealing? Maybe not. I don’t know. So I’m not judging.

I don’t think the Observer reporting on the Salt Path will change my enjoyment of the story. I assumed it wasn’t quite all the way it was told. And it got me reading again for the first time in ages. I do wonder a bit why the observer spent time and resources on investigating them.
