IIrc, one side of the street was used as a significant Union town and the other was a Confederate town.

I got a dressmaker's tape and the internet, for a first order approximation, then went shopping. Iirc, i only had to try on two to get the right size.

Also, sizes seem to vary from brand to brand, so i found a brand i like and stuck with them.
