in theory i assume this taxonomy is meant to discern lived experiences of privilege/offer equity to those less advantaged. but in application it hallucinates broad ethnic categories that only makes sense to a western liberal perspective. grouping all africans into one ethnicity for example is absurd

applying for an MA and i am encountering the unintelligibility of ethnic categorization. if white is an ethnicity which includes everyone from polish people to romani people (descended from north india) then how might someone accurately assess that they're from 'any other white background'

at the same time, i can’t count myself as one of them because at some point i placed my willingness to do a reparative reading for the show beyond where it can reach, for a lot of reasons but mostly because i think reparative readings for texts made by bigoted authors can only go so far.

have no problem lambasting the show itself (or at least its latter half) but point to headcanons like parentlock or landmark fanfictions that bring positive value to the series, despite or because of them being entirely auxiliary to it. to be clear: this is cool, & also the fundamentals of fandom.

in a way, a large part of the 2010s fanaticism around bbc sherlock was exactly fans doing live, en masse reparative readings: discarding problematic elements in anticipation of queer representation which would justify and vindicate their personal attachment to the series. to this day, many fans-

audience thresholds/tolerance. genuine fans of bbc sherlock in 2025 are usually people willing to do reparative readings of the text, meaning that they can acknowledge it’s political failings but are able to claim audience ownership over the show for fun, as expressed in fanart and fic culture.

i feel like i can summarize the modern discourse on bbc sherlock by dividing it into three camps of audiences, the first being casual viewers, the second are the remaining fans, and the third are the haters (closer to where i fall). looking at this fandom can also reveal something interesting about-

like if john watson was a chinese woman i want a sense of how being both chinese and a woman changes her interactions with holmes and the world she inhabits. and so far, it's largely subtextual, but i like to think that her refusal to baby him is a product of her past experiences with white men lol
