FWIW still absolutely enraged. Doesn't matter how loudly you decry Israel, doesn't matter how many grandparents' birthdays you ruin, you can still just get murdered for standing outside a shul

Life really is mostly just waiting for the next opportunity to explain why you put salt in the pan before boiling water.

An author, not yet ravaged by parenthood and mid-career stasis, stares piercingly out at us, into the corners of the empty room he conjures when his publicist warns him that sales are generally slow across the board it's nothing personal and asks him to share details of an event on his social media. Around him are details of the event and the cover of his latest novel which is really actually very good and doubtless a springboard for a stimulating discussion provided he can extricate himself from his home life and catch the right train.

Live in Lincoln? Like books? Have plans on Saturday October 25th? If you answered "Yes", "Some" and "Not yet" then do come along to this at @waterstones.bsky.social Lincoln. I'll be giddy from a three-hour solo train trip and positively bursting with insights, gossip and maledictions for my enemies

Agreed one all three. Hamaguchi might be my current favourite filmmaker. Possibly tied with Kelly Reichardt. He's just a master. I learned this year that he studied under Kiyoshi Kurasawa, which makes a lot of sense

PSA: Close, Tar and Evil Does Not Exist are all available to watch now on iPlayer. All would make my top 20-odd of the past few years.

When I make my children a special pancake breakfast I don't do it for the gratitude, but neither, in fairness, do I do it for the recriminations.

I didn't know until we buried my mother, so probably most people here don't know: Jewish cemeteries strongly recommend that you get insurance for the headstone.

Because the cemeteries are so often desecrated, the gravestones smashed.

A shortlist to get excited about - isn't that what we want from a prize?

My pal @arealmattgreene.bsky.social's The Definitions is on sale today in the UK (with US publication to follow).

And not only am I in awe of Matt's taut, shiversome elegance, but the book is good too!

One more awful thought: most Jews won't know about this yet. It's only lapsed ones like me who are on our phones. A lot of people will find out in a few hours once the fast goes out. They'll be an outpouring of grief (but not much surprise). If you feel like caveating it, don't.

02.10.2025 16:17 β€” πŸ‘ 30    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

Thank you Laura! And to you too! I don't have Awakened on my shelf yet but I'll be fixing that shortly!

a feeling that, whether it's acted on, is shared by pretty much every Jew you've ever met. That feels pretty personal.

02.10.2025 12:37 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Sorry: if it sounds like I'm taking this personally it's because I am, because it *is*. People murdered for standing outside a shul on the holiest day of the year. Murdered because they were Jewish. Murdered because on one particular day of the year they felt the need to congregate...

02.10.2025 12:36 β€” πŸ‘ 34    πŸ” 5    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

As a sidenote, we'll now see what we always do: the worst people alive rushing to condemn this and, as a result(?) a lot of people who should know better tiptoeing round the edges

02.10.2025 12:29 β€” πŸ‘ 12    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Of course this is heartbreaking, of course it's tragic. Of course there's a context. But it's also fucking infuriating

02.10.2025 12:24 β€” πŸ‘ 8    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

For those who don't understand, Yom Kippur is the day every Jew at the very least reflects on their relationship to their Jewishness. Some of us spend lifetimes trying to define that outside the frame of antisemitism. This isn't just a day of mass congregation, it's a chance at reclamation.

02.10.2025 12:23 β€” πŸ‘ 18    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Actually, fuck it, here's a further thought: multiple things can be true at once and I'm *more* than aware that the existence of antisemitism is extremely politically inconvenient and often amplified by the worst faith actors but it's never the fault of Jews as a collective who need solidarity now

I was able to deduce, in the dream state, that Pete Sampras had an alert set for the word 'tennis' but it only now occurs to me that he must've insulted every dissenter. It felt very personal

02.10.2025 06:21 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It was understood that these things had happened before the dream began. The body of the dream was connection issues preventing me from posting my reply: 'If i wanted to watch someone take an hour to eat a banana I'd give my son a banana'

02.10.2025 06:17 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Dreamed that I posted 'i don't like tennis' and Pete Sampras replied to call me a loser.

Looking forward to this. Tickets sales, I'm promised, are 'generally slow across the board - it's no reflection on you personally', so come on down for your chance at a private audience with not one but three (of your favourite [delete if not applicable]) authors
