I had the immense privilege of being the keynote speaker at #MDLS2025. In my talk, I reported on the work of the @datarescueproject.org. And while there were too many highlights to capture in one post, I hope this image sums it up.

The government isn’t releasing economic data. Private firms are stepping in. Without official numbers on jobs and inflation, Wall Street and Washington are turning to restaurant reservations, Broadway ticket sales, and alternate surveys to fill in the gaps.

They buried what should be the lede here: “Our data adds value, but it is very much a complement to public data.”

Private firms cannot replace a functioning statistical system. They do not exist to create public goods.

This post has been simmering in our drafts for a while. Like so many people, Fahrenheit 451 profoundly impacted me, and is one of the reasons I've been invested in long-term preservation of and access to information. I just didn't realize I'd have to fight for it in my lifetime, in my country.
