Extremist Sheriffs Are Taking Over the Country One County at a Time
Former sheriff Richard Mack is an icon for right-wing militias and extremists. Now, heβs recruiting cops around the country for his cause: Ultimate power for local law enforcement
To me, it speaks to the continued shifting of political norms when it comes to the normalization of far-right values in governance, even in "liberal" hubs.
Bianco is a so-called "constitutional sheriff," which is hugely problematic.

It is bizarre that SF Sheriff Paul Miyamoto has officially endorsed Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, a former far-right militia member who is under DOJ investigation + federal lawsuit, for CA governor.
Why would an SF official stick their neck out for a fringe candidate?

Why is one of the most powerful people in tech spending his time painting a target on a single small biz owner who works on unhoused issues?
Totally unsurprised that Garry Tan is parroting a rambling op-ed from Susan Dyer Reynolds in her right-wing rag The Voice of SF. Goofy.

More than a touch of grey
Boomers are still driving this city, so they might as well pick the tunes
Reformed Deadhead @habermatt.bsky.social has some thoughts on San Franciscoβs full city embrace of the band: βAs Iβve been watching the city reshape itself in the Deadβs image over the last few weeks, I find myself in a reflexive Gen-X pout.β

The biggest balls on Grant Avenue
Will 3,000-pound concrete bollards protect Grant Avenueβs high-end shops?
Happy Monday, all β @eddiekimx.bsky.social here with a story on the curious case of Grant Avenue's big ol' balls in downtown SF.
Can they really help protect the city's bougiest luxury shops? And *should* they? subtxt.to/kADsu4W

Nothing burger
In-N-Outβs billionaire owner serves up another steaming patty of culture-war red meat
There's no real problem with In-N-Out expanding into Tennessee.
But we're tired of the beloved burger chain's billionaire heiress flirting with the conservative culture war... again.
Here's @eddiekimx.bsky.social with some thoughts on this week's controversy.

For @sf.gazetteer.co:
I caught up with Bagpipe Guy at an anti-ICE protest yesterday. The way he's using the instrument is beautiful, especially considering the radical history of bagpipes in resistance movements.

Where the wild plums are
If you can find them, San Francisco is an orchard for summer stone fruits
Hey, it's @eddiekimx.bsky.social with an essay:
The Bay Area is famous for producing some amazing summer fruit, but nothing compares to the thrill of finding wild plums along SF streets, trails, and yards.
Here's my tribute to hunting these sweet, tiny ruby orbs. subtxt.to/6eh74Rs

Youβre gonna miss June Gloom when itβs gone
Everyone loves debating SFβs iconic chilly summers, but I hope they last forever
Hey, it's @eddiekimx.bsky.social with a pithy little piece on SF's beloved (or hated?) summer tradition: The foggy, gray-hued days of June Gloom.
Trust me, we would all miss it if it was no more...

A front-row view to an ICE abduction turns into chaos at Jackson Square
Even as press has dwindled, some protesters are still standing in the way of the feds
I went to the immigration facility at 630 Sansome St. to observe as protesters lined up to stop ICE detainments.
All was quiet until a wave of fed officers surrounded us, snapping open their steel batons and yelling for a fight.

It's been a year since I asked SFPD for basic data on # of flashbang grenades deployed against suspects.
Nothing yet.
Flashbangs are often used against mentally ill people who are noncompliant. It can cause lasting damage, but there's little accountability around their use.
