ICE activity has not noticeably tapered off yet here and in fact this week they seem to be focused on terrorizing kids at bus stops and schools.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

ICE has now carried out two summary executions of innocent people in the streets of an American city.

If you work for ICE, there's no denying that's the mission you're supporting now. You don't get to claim in one year or ten or twenty that you didn't know what ICE was doing. You're complicit.

We have been told for nearly 30 years that America needed to tolerate mass shootings because the broad availability of guns would help us defend ourselves from an overreaching federal government. That day has come. The people who said this are supporting the federal agents. Many have joined them.

The kind of people who are horrified at what is happening here and find it deeply un-American are, maybe counterintuitively, the kind of people who are MORE likely than average to know and remember historic abuses. It is their determination to rise above them that gives them moral strength!

People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.

There’s still a taboo in the media about describing Trump’s cognitive state.

It’s rooted in the idea that the US President being insane sounds so preposterous that it must be an inaccurate slur.

But it’s the hard truth.

All of this is a result of Trump being an unstable narcissistic megalomaniac.
