I remember Keith informing me of his new struggle with cancer. In those last months, I had been struggling with depression so we communicated less. I do not know how he experienced his last months, but I would like to imagine he did with the same tenacity and good humor for which I treasured him.

We helped each other to move house multiple times. I will remember Keith for his sunny disposition, ruthless punning, and readiness to help.

After first meeting Keith through work, we soon became friends. We connected online to play Minecraft, No Man's Sky, and Outward during 2020, and as our precautions lifted Keith was one of my first friends to visit in person for board games.

I saw Keith was a very well educated engineer who was struggling with nervousness, and I encouraged him to preservere to become the valuable team member I knew he would become. When I heard he'd been hired by Proofpoint I was very happy for his accomplishment.

At the time Keith joined our team I had become a "subject matter expert" and mentor to the newer techs, so my first connections with Keith were in that role.

Before I begin, I'm composing this reflection to honor our friendship. I met Keith through work, at Sutherland Global Services, where we served Proofpoint's customers.

When I heard of Keith's passing I had expected that I would attend the celebration of his life. Unfortunately, I have been focused on my own spiritual recovery and am now committed to attending a meditation retreat with the Rochester Zen Center.

It's been hard to sit on the mat this week. (It's always hardest when I need it the most.)

#CPTSD I'm sitting in this little convenience store today near home because the feels have been overwhelming this month. I ought to be working, making some money, but depression has been kicking my ass.

I remember blogging, and I imagine that's what I'm doing now; addressing the community. There's a place for that to be sure. But we need our people too.

I don't think it's just the #CPTSD talking. I believe it's important we prioritize authentic, deep relationships. I imagine that many of us struggle to find that on Social Media. This is why I've refused to use Facebook for years, that I could not just have a conversation, but only react.

TBH I'd appreciate it if you answered me seriously. Maybe you're trying to be fun, but - it's not just the political moment - I suffer with #CPTSD and have a hard time trusting people.
