...*slower* responses to 2 targets than just 1 target alone. We confirmed that this does in fact occur when the task is to judge the meaning of written words. This shows that your ability to recognize two words at once is quite limited.

This experiment compares responses to 1 target vs. 2 targets. If you can process targets in parallel with no deficit, then you should be faster for 2 targets than 1 target. We also developed a new serial model and a new fixed-capacity parallel model, both of which can predict the opposite effect...

Can you recognize two words at once?
When you look around, you see a world full of objects. But can you truly identify multiple things at once, or are you limited to focusing on one at a time? This study investigates that limit using a s...
When you look around, you see a world full of objects. But can you fully identify multiple objects at once? In this new study, we revived and updated a classic experimental test: the redundant target paradigm. link.growkudos.com/1elj6rh9o8w

Redirecting
No deal. We gain insights by comparing how readers process words in 'normal' & 'abnormal' circumstances. That shows effects of learning. It also valuable to study fundamental processing capacity limits. "Unnatural" tasks may correlate with natural reading to reveal mechanisms of indiv. differences.

...and then feedback to the letter units of both words. That's a sketch of a model that can account for the apparently serial result with unrelated word pairs and the better-than-serial result for compound pairs. It blurs the distinction between purely parallel and purely serial.

Almost. We propose that there is at least parallel activation of sublexical orthographic information (letter detectors). Then serial lexical access: only 1 letter string gets to activate potential word units. But at that level, activation spreads laterally to compatible word units (bed -> room)...

Diagrams of experimental stimuli and results, showing that while 2 scrambled words cannot be processed in parallel, accuracy exceeds the serial model when 2 words happen to form a compound word.
A while ago I found that people can't simultaneously recognize 2 words flashed above & below fixation. My clever students devised experiments to show that the simple serial model can't account for what happens when the 2 words form a compound (e.g. bottle + neck) authors.elsevier.com/a/1mEmD2Hx2-...

I agree. The FDA approves drugs, not the NIH.
But I have the impression that the distinction between research (like the NIH funds) and policy (like the FDA sets) isn't clear to many critics. So exalting the NIH's success at creating lots of drugs could just fuel more suspicion in some audiences.

Many good points in this post!
But for some audiences it's a risky strategy to emphasize all the FDA-approved drugs. Many people like RFK Jr and his supporters believe, not without reason, that Americans are over-prescribed drugs and that the pharmaceutical industry has corrupt influence.

NIH-supported research leads to improvements in health that can bolster the economy, improve productivity, and reduce the costly burden of illness.
Cutting NIH funding is a bad idea for the economy. "In fiscal year 2023, every $1 of NIH funding generated approximately $2.46 of economic activity." Other facts here: www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...
