this is not to say my students don't have great insights when they finally commit to research topics, but rather they are frozen with the prospect of choice until they are pressed into it

with the proliferation of special interest/hyperfixation language online it surprises me that many students lack (or don't want to share) the niches they commit to in their online lives

on the one hand, when i was their age i was allergic to choosing essay topics but i also notice so many of my students gravitate towards topics ive seen hashed out on tiktok. oftentimes students are lost on a sea of ambivalence and i can't tell if it's due to disinterest or genuine lack of direction

wondering if algorithms are making my students scared of personal choice or the lack of surety is just regular 18 year old behavior
