I never figured out how to “gut” a book & felt it would spoil the surprise to skip to the end. Maybe non-traditional scholars—we who return to learning later in life—over-valorize reading for delight.

My advisor laughed at me, but didn’t show me a way to read differently. This essay shows the way!
