"quite a bit of the blame for this sad degradation of journalism, albeit absolutely not all of it, can be laid at the feet of the very same tech companies whose platforms destroyed the old journalism model, and who are now feverishly demanding that everyone shove LLM suppositories up their orifices.

How AI slop is causing a crisis in computer science
Preprint repositories and conference organizers are having to counter a tide of βAI slopβ submissions.
Massive boom in conference submissions (chock full of AI fabrications) due to LLM adoption is NOT "increased researcher productivity"
It is research integrity failure, knowledge degradation, disciplinary suicide

This is why electrification means more energy security:
In 2024, ~81% of EU electricity came from locally sourced fuels (57% excluding nuclear). Just 19% relied on imported fossil fuels.
Fossil fuels are mostly imported.

Let's talk about abyssal gigantism:
The tendency of animals found in ocean depths to be substantially LARGER than shallow-water cousins.
This is the giant squid (Architeuthis dux), which can reach 13 m (~40 feet) long from 'head' to tentacle tip.
They can live at depths of 1000+ m.

Carl Sagan unveils the Pale Blue Dot image
Today is the 36th anniversary of the pale blue dot picture. Yesterday we did a journal club about a classic Sagan paper and my grad student BP ended by sharing this video. Iβd heard the more polished pale blue dot speech so many times but I find this one to be more human

Hydroclimate shapes photosynthetic sensitivity to cloud cover across global terrestrial ecosystems
Nature Communications - Clouds affect photosynthesis differently across hydroclimates: they enhance it in arid regions but reduce it in humid regions. With climate warming, changes in cloud cover...
Clouds affect photosynthesis: they reduce sunlight but also supply rain. So are clouds good or bad for plants? New paper shows that it depends on water availability. Clouds will shrink in the warming future. That makes vegetation decline in arid regions and increase in humid regions. rdcu.be/e3TmT

A black-and-white portrait photograph of pioneering nuclear physicist Fay Ajzenberg-Selove, taken in her later career years. She is seated in a cozy, book-lined study or office, surrounded by shelves of books and framed photos on the wall behind her. She has short, neatly styled graying hair and warm, intelligent eyes, wears large, round-framed glasses that accentuate her thoughtful gaze. She has a gentle, knowing smile and is dressed in a patterned blouse or dress with a polka-dot or textured dark fabric, a small brooch or pin on her collar, and a simple necklace. Her hands rest calmly in front of her as she sits slightly turned toward the camera, exuding quiet confidence, resilience, and intellectual depth. The setting highlights her lifelong dedication to science, from her groundbreaking work on light nuclei spectroscopy to her influential compilations of nuclear data, and her advocacy for women in physics despite facing significant gender barriers in academia. The image captures her as a trailblazing figure who received the National Medal of Science in 2007 and left an enduring legacy in #nuclearphysics.
Nuclear physicist Fay Ajzenberg-Selove was born #OTD in 1926. She authored decades of authoritative compilations on light nuclei energy levels (researchers' "nuclear bible"). Recipient, National Medal of Science (US 2007) for advancing nuclear #physics. Advocate for #WomenInScience.

A satelliteβderived map showing accumulated rainfall over the Iberian Peninsula from 1 to 7 February 2026. Western Portugal and parts of northwestern Spain appear in deep red, indicating more than 250 millimetres of rainfall. Surrounding areas are shown in shades of blue, representing lower rainfall totals. Cities including Lisbon, Vigo, Madrid and Marbella are labelled. A legend at the bottom right displays rainfall values from 0 to over 250 millimetres.
A radarβbased comparison image of the Tagus River region in Portugal using Copernicus Sentinelβ1 data from 27 December 2025 and 7 February 2026. Flooded areas are highlighted in bright red, spreading along the river and its tributaries northeast of Lisbon. The surrounding landscape appears in greyβblue tones. Coastal areas and inland terrain are clearly visible, with a scale bar indicating 10 kilometres and a date label in the lower right corner.
