Populism, at its heart, is the denial of complexity. It proposes simplistic solutions to complex problems, based on an 'us vs them' culture, but does little by way of offering tangible solutions.

The reason why commentators and politicians on the right are keen to portray poverty as a result of 'individual character flaws' and 'poor choices', is because they want to deflect from the structural inequalities and poor political choices that have caused poverty.
