02.04.2025 02:29 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Engaging with kindness, curiosity, and respect has a significant impact on others. Yesterday, we shared a lengthy essay by Jason Egenberg on how to provide Trump followers an off-ramp, which we have condensed for brevity. The original Substack post is linked in the comments. For many, MAGA is not just a movement but part of their identity, emphasizing belonging, visibility, and importance. MAGA voters see themselves as patriots defending their values, feeling betrayed by a system that threatens their identity. They cannot admit to being deceived by a con man. To counter the MAGA personality cult, we must offer an off-ramp where they feel accepted, valued, and part of something larger without forcing a choice between Trumpism and humiliation. 1. Stop Shaming and Start Listening. Don't fall into the "blame game;" it only makes people feel more defensive and keeps them trapped in the MAGA mindset. Give them permission to change their minds. 2. Give Them a New Narrative. Instead of making people feel stupid for falling for the con, keep telling them they were lied to. Shift the blame to Trump and his enablers. Let people know that by leaving Trump they are defending their values, not abandoning them.
3. Offer an Alternative Identity that respects them, supports their patriotism, and their defense of our country. This acknowledges their sense of grievance while facilitating constructive change alongside others with different political viewpoints. Reclaiming America Starts With Reclaiming Americans We can't beat Trumpism just by defeating Trump. If Trumpism isn't actively dismantled, we're not just looking at another four years of chaos; we're looking at a future where MAGA becomes America's new lost cause in the same way the Confederate ideology became a lost cause that didn't die with the Civil War but gave rise to a white supremacist movement that lasted for generations. If we don't defeat Trumpism, we're looking at a future where a grievance-driven movement outlives Trump himself. We can't save democracy by writing off half the country. We need to give Trump followers a reason - an invitation - to come home. (Our thanks to Jason Egenberg for the thoughtful piece he published on Substack. I recommend joining the Card Campaign. They have excellent advice on how to help people stuck in the Cheeto cult.
