An intricate octopus cut from a single piece of paper

Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as “cut picture”), the art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and then contrasting it against a black background to reveal the design.

I visited Kyoto, Japan, this year to photograph the Sakura season--Japanese cherry trees in bloom. This painting captures the view from Philosopher's Path, a winding walkway of large stones that traverses the width of Kyoto. The path follows a water-filled canal, and cherry trees overhang the entire walkway. This painting captures the peaceful beauty of cherry trees at dusk.
