The day of Ichigos benchmark with the Pale Horse arrives and his friends see him off from the viewing deck, pale withdrawn, angry and afraid that if he does come back, he wont be the same.

These symbiotes are implanted onto war criminals/inmates other unsavoury characters as the Espada hostbase, theyre like biological mechas inserted into the true machine, a huge step beyond from whatever Shiro is inside the Pale Horse, they look human on the surface but are puppeted by a parasite

The Espada are Aizens little project in the grand scheme of hollow invasions, with the seireitei struggling to keep active pilots in warshape and bolstering their fleeting ranks with new blood, he shows up with war machines of his own, at their core theyre symbiotes grown in tubes

Renewed brawling but Ichigo snags renji by the collar and shakes him raises his voice until it echoes off the walls of the alley that he wont let that happen to her, none of thats gonna happen to anyone hes gonna become strong enough to protect them all, and renji. Covered in blood believes him

Rukia is choosing this, to be here with them theyd never disrespect her by telling her what she can and cant if she couldnt do the same for them, making a difference, training with them makes her happy!! Doesnt her happiness matter and Renjis lunging like she cant be happy if shes fucking dead

Agonised, Renji yells that he hates ichigo and his friends for putting rukia into such danger in the first place, if they really were her friends theyd tell her to quit, live a safe life, overprotective misplaced machismo kinda stuff and ichigo tells him thats not what Rukia wants. She Chose this

renji and ichigo doNot get along they butt heads, gripe and sass each other to the point that it boils up and over during one of their allocated recreation days off and they end up brawling in a shit alley until theyre bloodied bruised and ichigos straddling renji haloed by neon streetlight seething

And then the reassignment is signed and sealed in ichigos blood, or will be the Pale Horse looms and Rukia devastated begs ichigo to let her do it, it wasnt supposed to involve any of them, Renji is also signed to their unit as a means to oversee Ichigo up until his synch mark w the Pale Horse

Byakuya drops his ass, its no contest

Informs blandly that he will be reviewed accordingly, Cadet Kurosakis always been a glaring outlier for almost everything he’s been enrolled for

Ichigo spits at his feet and snarls at him to take his garbage rules and shove it, hows that for a choice.

Byakuya drones on about duty and if she didnt want this to happen she shouldnt have joined the mech program, Which is totally besides the point tbh and what her rights are (legally) so Ichigo goes n does what he does best with his fists because action is his preferred communication method

Byakuya likewise has zero patience for people like Ichigo and informs him if he cared as much as he appears he wouldve volunteered to take Rukia’s place, this is Rukias duty and Ichigos like ??? No it fucking isnt as if you gave her a choice

Ichigo’s reasons for joining the seireitei’s mecha pilot program is simple, to protect his sisters and the people he values n loves, this is the clearest path forward, hes a transfer from the karakura branch and given a snobby substitute pilot title and starts off benched despite his training stats

What time she spent in the simulators and training, she now spends on being human finding the time to breathe and be a person who lives for herself, to the reaper organisation she becomes deadweight and ofc Ichigo wont take that lying down, everyone knows what goes in that mech doesnt come out whole

Through whatever means its not that important tbh, Rukia is assigned to be the Pale Horse’s next test pilot, from a decorated military family she was sent to seireitei to uphold familty honor, however there she meets the ichigang and actually learns to live for herself, bc of this her stats drop

Shiro/hollowichigo is the prototype model symbiote that resides inside the unnamed mecha, model Pale Horse and every pilot that has gone inside it has either come out in pieces, pieces missing or mentally undone, the Pale Horse is an effective death sentence for cadets in training

Basically exploring the fuckery of identity and self and medicolegal human rights and all the ethics that would involve whilst fighting for the survival of humanity against awesome alienoid inhuman supercreatures that are kind of a metaphor for the state of the pilots where do they begin and end
