To become dependent on ChapGPT is to evacuate yourself from your own life.

YIKES, no thanks. I’m gonna be alive inside every damn thing I do, even and especially the ish I don’t wanna do.

Two great bits of academic attack work this week. The new one allows Android apps to see data displayed on the screen by other apps, including Google Authenticator codes. www.pixnapping.com

The entire Republican Party has lined up solidly behind a would-be fascist dictator with a narcissistic psychopathic personality disorder. But the real problem is that Democrats spent too long backing a president who often looked and sounded old.

An extraordinary story about how scientists in the US are afraid to speak up as the entire science research ecosystem is demolished at the hands of the Republican administration.

Without our voices, how will people understand the scope and generational consequences of the ongoing destruction?

Crushing to hear of more junior colleagues in the computer science & human-computer interaction (HCI) space whose NSF CAREER grants were terminated this week. I'm hopeful that philanthropic funders can find a way to support this generation of scientists studying online manipulation, bias in AI, etc.

UPDATE: We have data on >1000 terminated #NSF grants at grant-watch.us. Thanks to all who have been contributing data the past few days.

We've also added a "Reports" section with some analyses. For NSF, we see that the STEM education directorate has been absolutely pummeled.

The NYT wants you to think universities became dependent on government. This is false.

The government invested in the national research infrastructure by competitive grants to universities. The taxpayers built this. It got us to the moon. Won the Cold War. Created Silicon Valley. Made the McRib.

I wrote about this a bit in my last book but it really shakes me that a defining feature of this catastrophic era is that we just keep going to work. We work through pandemics, we work through natural disasters, we work through economic calamity, we work through coups, we work, we work, we work.

being a white male conservative in the US is genuinely one of the easiest lives it is possible to live, and you can tell that's the case bc these morons think having someone tell you your opinions suck ass is the worst thing that could ever happen to you

Exit Poll

Where should I put
my feminist rage?
Chew it up,
swallow it,
let it sit
heavy in my gut,
undigested
for seven years?
Wrap it
in a body bag,
tie it at the knees,
dump it
in the Boston Harbor?
Deposit it into
a savings account
under my husband's name?
Crush it
with my bare feet,
ferment it in oak barrels,
drink it alone?
Paint
my nails with it,
shiny, black, expensive,
sharpened
to points?
Or bestow it,
carefully
(a fragile
inheritance
cradled
against my chest)
upon my daughters?
