Seeing Walz withdraw from the MN gov race while the Epstein files continue to emit fumes w/o consequences and RFKjr marshals more children to die, I am reflecting on the burden of shame & contrition. It seems the only people who can succeed in our current info & political environment feel no shame.

Thanksgiving What can we say today that hasn't been said a thousand times before? To survive, we don't need to read poetry as the sunlight slips silently from the pine tops. We don't need to spin on a disk down the snowy hill, again and again, not salmon fighting the current. We don’t need to gather. We don't need to light candles, sprinkle cinnamon sugar, wrap sparkling bulbs around the birches. But we do, we do.

Not sure about everyone else, but I’m encouraged today (elated?) that we learned last night that we can beat candidates/parties of bullshit, AI slop, corruption, and authoritarianism without emulating them and without tacking towards a false center between us and them.

Crushing to hear of more junior colleagues in the computer science & human-computer interaction (HCI) space whose NSF CAREER grants were terminated this week. I'm hopeful that philanthropic funders can find a way to support this generation of scientists studying online manipulation, bias in AI, etc.
