The stages of making a record: lathe, lacquer (positive), metal-master (negative), mother (positive), stamper (negative), record (positive).
This is neat: silver (100k copies), gold (500k), and (maybe?) platinum (1m) records seem to be originally tied to significant milestones when certain components of the molding toolchain needed to be retired.
I would love to see the math on this.
