Today was the 2nd day of the ethnobotany course Mahajanga University in Madagascar! Students practiced freelisting and in the photo a Species ID task, giving vernacular names to local beans and pulses. We also talked rice and enjoyed delicious โ€˜gord gordโ€™, a snack based on rice flour and coconut.

Guess the seed? The dry pulp around the seed can be chewed on โ€œa little bit like chewing gumโ€.
The seeds contain calcium, along with other essential nutrients like phosphorus, magnesium, and iron.

Drawn by Harriet Scott, one of Australiaโ€™s most prominent natural history illustrators, it shows the stark difference between a live and a dried specimen ๐Ÿ‘‡

Lost cities of the Amazon: how science is revealing ancient garden towns hidden in the rainforest Archaeologists using 3D mapping are uncovering the remains of thousands of green metropolises with composted gardens, fisheries, and forests groomed into orchards

Fascinating news about ancient Amazonian societies! New mapping techniques reveal that ancestral Amazonians systematically built up large urban centres and engineered the habitat to their needs and appetites with composted gardens, fisheries, and forests.
