Today was the 2nd day of the ethnobotany course Mahajanga University in Madagascar! Students practiced freelisting and in the photo a Species ID task, giving vernacular names to local beans and pulses. We also talked rice and enjoyed delicious โgord gordโ, a snack based on rice flour and coconut.

Guess the seed? The dry pulp around the seed can be chewed on โa little bit like chewing gumโ.
The seeds contain calcium, along with other essential nutrients like phosphorus, magnesium, and iron.

Fascinating news about ancient Amazonian societies! New mapping techniques reveal that ancestral Amazonians systematically built up large urban centres and engineered the habitat to their needs and appetites with composted gardens, fisheries, and forests.
