Baobab

The original 'bath bomb': Katrafay (𝘊𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘪) is a tree endemic to Madagascar. Its bark contains a therapeutic essential oil treating muscle pain and skin inflammation and providing sustainable income for local communities.

Today was the 2nd day of the ethnobotany course Mahajanga University in Madagascar! Students practiced freelisting and in the photo a Species ID task, giving vernacular names to local beans and pulses. We also talked rice and enjoyed delicious ‘gord gord’, a snack based on rice flour and coconut.

It’s seeds from the baobab fruit!

Guess the seed? The dry pulp around the seed can be chewed on “a little bit like chewing gum”.
The seeds contain calcium, along with other essential nutrients like phosphorus, magnesium, and iron.
