Stages of writing:
1. Rough draft
2. Structural edits
3. Line-level edits
4. I’m going to print this story out just so I can have the pleasure of tearing it to pieces with my teeth like a wild animal ripping through a garbage heap

Shout-out to the stage of revision when you go through your story for the ten thousandth time and discover that you've completely lost the ability to tell if anything makes sense, that's a great stage, I love that stage, by which I mean: urgghhhghghghghhh.

I should add: teaching is the best thing I get to do, it is the reason I love my job, my students are brilliant, and every single day I leave campus feeling full of hope and joy thanks to them.

Oh no, thank you for giving me a reason to be grateful for my hour-long commute 😭

Truly this is what peak performance looks like: sipping an energy drink in my car, staring blankly into space, fantasizing about punting my phone into the sea as it lights up with emails.

“If I sign up to teach at 8 in the morning, I’ll have all afternoon to write” was a plan that did unfortunately fail to account for several obligatory hours of post-teaching-sitting-in-the-driveway-and-dissociating.

Yes! I’d tried to write (and not finished) longer things, and I remember being so excited by the idea of a short story: I could finish this! Then I went on a tear writing several more shorts mostly inspired by My Chemical Romance, aaand then didn’t write a short story again for, like, 15 years 😆
