Plus, after Threshing he'll have to worry about those who did not get chosen by dragons to become Riders. People who will think killing Katsuki will automatically gain them his potential dragon's bond.

In other words, he can't ever be off his guard. If he is, it might just kill him.

The threats against his life will likely get even worse if he survives Threshing. (Many cadets don't.) Half will probably get burned alive for whatever weaknesses the dragons sense in them and the other half won't survive the attacks from the other cadets on the field.

Much to mosts disappointment, he didn't fall hundreds of feet off the Parapet, he didn't get crushed by the oscillating stones on the Gauntlet, and so far no one has had the pleasure of catching him unaware.

Katsuki can't argue her. Anyone not in his Squad is someone who probably wants him killed just for the legacy he represents by being here.

“You made an enemy in that one,” Kaminari whispers as they watch Shindou stomp off to the Menders.

“We're all enemies around here,” Mina says solemnly. “It'll do us all good not to forget that.”

Blood stains the mat, and when Katsuki does the honorable thing and offers a hand to help Shindou up (since one of his arms is useless) the black-haired asshole spits on his boots.

Katsuki almost lunges forward to break the fucker’s other arm.

Katsuki wins, barely. Although Shindou had seemed ready to beat him senseless with his limp apendage. It's not an easy victory. His eye's going to swell shut and his lip probably needs stitches with how hard it's split.

The look in his black eyes tells Katsuki he very much would like to kill him.

So Katsuki grits his teeth against the pain of a few lucky shots and breaks Shindou's arm when he comes for him next.

Katsuki's not lost a challenge yet, (Mina doesn't count since she didn't get him to tap out-- The professors had called it a draw) and he's not about to lose now. Shindou isn't in his Squad, so by the rules outlined in the Codex, if he wants to, there's no penalty for killing Katsuki right here.

It's another week of challenges, and today Katsuki's up against some asshole named Shindou. He's tall and built way thicker than Katsuki's lean muscle. He's not fast, but he's skilled, and when he nails a left hook to Katsuki's cheek it vibrates his entire body.

He's not sure how she got here, but the scar on her jaw, the way she handed him his ass on Assessment day, and the brand on her lower back makes him think it was no easy journey.

So no, they're not his friends. But they're his Squad, and he'd trust them with his life.

She doesn't say much during those times, but Katsuki can feel her grief. Her home must be beyond the border, one lost to her forever.

So. He maybe lets her in his room later than the others and doesn't argue when she slips into his sheets to cry about the home she left behind to come here.

And Mina, well, she's surprisingly good at classwork, and she's quick on her feet during challenges (she’s the only challenge he's not won), and it irritates Katsuki that she's the only person who doesn't really want or need anything from him.
