Funny how there's a pretty consistent editorial campaign aimed at getting Ireland to "pull our weight" in Europe's defence, but there isn't one asking us to pull our weight in addressing our fair share of climate emissions #spรฉirgorm

IMO Statement on Gaza
โThe deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid and targeting of aid sites is a violation of International Humanitarian Law".
Expresses its deepest solidarity with healthcare workers in Gaza
The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) is gravely concerned with the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where civilians, particularly children, are facing extreme levels of starvation, displacement, and violence. The situation is intolerable and cannot be alleviated without urgent international action.
The United Nations (UN) has reported that the worst-case scenario of famine is now unfolding in the Gaza Strip and mounting evidence shows that widespread starvation, malnutrition, and disease are driving a rise in hunger-related deaths.
Healthcare workers are among those starving, even while striving to treat the wounded and care for communities under appalling conditions.
What is needed in Gaza is the full and immediate lifting of all barriers to humanitarian aid. Aid must be allowed to flow safely and freely through non-partisan and trusted international partners such as the UN. The deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid and targeting of aid sites is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and their protocols.
The health system in Gaza has collapsed. Doctors are being forced to deliver care in conditions that defy belief. They are under constant threat, without adequate equipment, and often without electricity or clean water. Many of our medical colleagues have been injured or killed in the course of their work. The IMO expresses its deepest solidarity with healthcare workers in Gaza and their families and salutes their courage and commitment to their work.
International humanitarian law must be respected and enforced. We urge the Irish Government and the European Union to take immediate and decisive action to protect civilians in Gaza and ensure access to food, water, shelter, and medical care. These are fundamental human rights.
What's needed is far more, but saying this much is better than nothing.
It's really sad that even at this late hour ANY statement is welcome, but let's be real here.
This is a genocide, not a catastrophe.
The perpetrators (and allies) should be named.
Is this the best we can do? Even now?

Diplomats:
We dedicated our professional lives to upholding and promoting core European values and international law, building the reputation of the European Union and defending the interests of its peoples. Those interests and that reputation are now in serious jeopardy as a result of EU inaction.

The soul recovers radical innocence
...
You can, though every face should scowl
And every windy quarter howl
Or every bellows burst, be happy still.
May your soul always keep its radical innocence.
Welcome to the world Zaki.

Neo-colonialism at work
Some of the same parties behind a genocide (2 concurrently for some) and "worst humanitarian crisis on record" are going to do what? Altruistically intervene to achieve peace and prosperity for Sudan?
Call me a skeptic...

Cover of Tayeb Salih's most famous novel, Season of Migration to the North.
The top half of the cover shows the title of the book (left), while on the right is a map of London with Big Ben in the background.
The bottom half shows a map of Sudan, with various images superimposed, like a mosque minaret, a man riding a camel, a pyramid and a knife,
Black and white photo of Tayeb Salih.
Today's thread is for #booksky -- 3 Sudanese writers to introduce you to #Sudan's literary heritage!
1. Tayeb Salih: THE name in Sudanese literature, Sudan's most known writer. Also dubbed "genius of the modern Arabic novel". His novels reflect the reality of rural life in Sudan's Northern State.

Who does this government serve? Protest crackdowns and neutrality debates spark outrage
A speaking rights row, moves away from neutrality, and garda action against anti-war protesters are all signs of a worrying trend for democracy
"Any one of these events occurring as an isolated incident is a matter of concern. But the fact that all of the aforementioned events occurred over the course of a week forming part of a pattern that threatens the democratic process of the State is deeply alarming."
A very worrying moment indeed.

Objectively awful decision.
Is our "republican" party just reinterpreting their identity to align with their north American reactionary counterparts?
Interesting moment to make that pivot...

Dr Niall Conroy (red polo shirt) and the maternity team outside the Boe Conroy Mothers Dormitory in the largest hospital in the region in Sierra Leone
An emotional Dr Conroy cuts the ribbon on the Boe Conroy Mothers Dormitory
Dr Niall Conroy named his son Boe after the region in Sierra Leone where he works. A few days ago the hospital returned the favour by naming the Mothers Dormitory after Boe. This podcast is that story. And itโs brilliant.

Panel 1: Mark Zuckerberg stands on the stage at a Meta all-hands meeting, wearing a little chain and a shirt that says "Cool Dude." "I think our company could use more Masculine Energy," he says into a mic. In the crowd, an employee raises their hand. "Excuse me, Mr. Zuckerberg," the person asks. Panel 2: The person stands up, asking, "By "Masculine Energy," do you mean a mature definition where men in power use their relative strength to protect and uplift those less privileged?" Panel 3: The person continues, "โฆor a more childish definition where men in power are free to be aggressive and harm others without being held accountable?" Panel 4: Zuck stands silent for a beat. Panel 5: "You're all fired," he says.

I think you can admire people while also seeing their humanity and not expecting infallibility from them. We're usually drawn towards our friends because of something we admire in them aren't we?
But I do take your overall point RE: pedestals, real or figurative.
