something I think is underdiscussed about employment/capitalism discourse is that abusive/bad labor/management practices are probably more common in nonprofits and trendy organizations that people on the left are likely to work for than big boring office companies

I fail to see a sustainable business model in them but perhaps putting them close to alcohol-heavy tourist traps is more sustainable financially

What most interested me here was about how to write about the co-mediation of ideas, people & organisations.
So this @jcultecon.bsky.social podcast is really about our shared interest in issuesof intellectual/institutional history - although Simone & I only really realised this after it finished...

To an extent, though, you will have to run universities (or any other organisation, including actual businesses) like businesses. But to what extent? University administrators—and academics, too, I'm afraid—don't know, because they can't say what else the university is about anymore.

Another way to make this point—there are many—it is that an irony of these debates is that the people who end up most prone to magical thinking about “positivism” or “quantification”, etc, are the people who hate it the most, and who nominally endorse ideas meant to free you from magical thinking.

How not to talk about capitalism
The more it penetrates our daily lives, the less we seem to understand the “system that runs the world”
“Readers braving [Beckert’s] 1100 pages should mentally prepare to end up without a clear idea of what capitalism is; they can find comfort in the fact that the author doesn’t have one either.” www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2025/1...

This cannot be said enough because it holds true across the Western world: the fact that the average politician has never been as bad as today also means that entering politics has never been *cheaper*

OK Spotify Wrapped is about revealed preferences ("you posted those Quietus links but when your mum died you kept playing that Celine Dion album she liked, look how basic you really are! share & cringe lol" etc)
But genuine Q: are there good techniques for measuring revealed prefs *qualiitatively*?

Ah, I see. It should be possible to define the kind of applications for this and I would assume that the corresponding techniques are either a mix of rather local knowledges and theories with no clear hierarchical relationship or any variation of "lots of data, lots of overly complicated statistics"

Ah, I now see what you mean. You basically want to differentiate between your preferences throughout the year and the preferences during that one intense week where you listen to nothing but Celine Dion?
