The picture shows a series of steps leading upwards along a hiking trail. To the left and right are trees and pink azalea bushes in bloom. At the end of the steps is an opening, behind which a steep rock face can be seen. The sun shines through this opening, illuminating the steps.

The viewer sees three cows and a small part of a typical village in the Azores, specifically on the island of São Miguel. A Catholic church, whose architectural style is very similar to almost all other churches on the island (whiewashed walls, volcanic stone frames, red roof and an open bell tower), a music pavilion, houses built of natural stone with red roof tiles, houses with white plastered walls, small gardens, hills, pastures, hedges and fields. The house where I live is not visible in the picture.

The picture shows a green strip in the foreground on the left, consisting entirely of African daisies (Osteospermum), many of which are in bloom at this time of year. Most of the flowers are purple, but there are also some white ones in between.
Behind them are some of the rugged cliffs of Maia, which are made of black lava rock. Behind them are the central and western parts of the north coast of São Miguel and the village of Porto Formoso. The Atlantic Ocean has little swell but a rough surface, suggesting a fresh wind. It is currently low tide.

The picture shows a typical fishing port cargo crane in the upper third, which consists practically only of a jib on a post. It is painted turquoise and marked ‘16t’. The picture shows a mountain path in a forest full of Japanese cedars. One of these trees has broken at a height of about one metre. The upper part of the tree is hanging across the path. The hiking trail follows a water pipe that carries drinking water from Lagoa do Fogo to the villages further down on the south side of the island. Unlike the north coast, large parts of the south coast have no streams that could be used for drinking water supply.

In the picture, you can see a viewing platform built from red volcanic stone blocks on the left, with moss and grass growing in the joints. In the middle are two azalea hedges, which are currently blooming pink. In front of them are a few other shrubs. On the right is a deciduous tree that is not native to the area and has no leaves at this time of year. In the background is a hilly landscape and some houses in the village of Pedreira. In the centre of the picture, you can see a small waterfall, only about two to three metres high, consisting of three streams that flow into a small, shallow pool, which in turn flows into a small river to the right of the viewer. The rock edge is covered with moss. In the foreground are stones covered with grass, moss and ferns. All of this is located in a gorge in a forest. Both sides are covered with ginger lilies. Further upstream, you can see Pittosporum undulatum trees.

The picture shows two large azalea bushes blooming profusely in pink next to a rain-wet road. Behind them are plane trees, one of the few imported tree species in the Azores that shed their leaves in winter. The picture shows a steeply rising rock face made of ochre-coloured sedimentary rock in the ocean, covered with grass at the top. To the right is a freestanding ‘tower’ made of the same rock, which is occasionally used for cliff diving events financed by a manufacturer of an incredibly awful-tasting, extremely unpleasant-smelling and certainly unhealthy soft drink. In the foreground are a few splashes of water. All this under a blue sky with a few harmless white clouds.

The viewer looks down from a slightly elevated vantage point onto a small river. The river flows around a small, rocky island covered with all kinds of plants. There, and in other isolated places in the picture, you can see plants consisting of several stems, each ending in a very large leaf. These are taro (Colocasia esculenta). Taro roots are a popular starchy food here, alongside potatoes and sweet potatoes. When cooked, they look like grey potatoes.
The plants in the picture have settled there on their own; a larger field has been planted nearby. Taro grows in places where hardly any other food crops would thrive. That is why you can see fields of it on shady steep slopes in the forest, for example.

In the foreground of the picture, you can see a camellia tree (Camellia japonica) about 5 metres high with rich green leaves, covered in blood-red flowers. Camellias on São Miguel are mainly red, white or pink, and very rarely have two-coloured flowers. Although they can grow to a height of around 20 metres, they are usually planted as hedges. The tea plant (Camellia sinensis), which is commercially cultivated on São Miguel, is a close relative and visually difficult to distinguish. In the background is a small green hedge covered in pink flowers. This is one of thousands of azalea hedges on São Miguel that bloom from January to April, depending on their location. To the right is a red sand track.
