I'm pretty impressed. I'll have a couple videos about them coming soon. One of the videos will examine 5nm bandpass filters with 12nm bandpass filters. Camera: ZWO 294MM pro, scope Orion 80mm ED doublet. It still needs more exposure time, but it's not bad :)

I've been testing out some new 5nm SHO filters (fully funded by me and my YT and BMC supporters; not sent to me) on several targets. This is a test of the heart nebula (IC 1805). It's about 1.5 hours for each filter (so, about 4.5 hours total).

There are a ton of galaxies in this image. In the middle are NGC 6045 and 6047. If you zoom in and look, there are edge on galaxies, interacting galaxies, merging galaxies. It's a galaxy extravaganza!

I just wish I had about 4x the amount of integration time to really control the noise and the background. Next galaxy season, I'll try to get more data and combine it.

This was taken a few months ago, but I never got around to processing it because... am lazy. And I was afraid of what it would look like. At an apparent magnitude of about 12, and in Bortle 6-7 skies, it's definitely within reach for my C8.

NGC 6384 is such a beautiful galaxy, and a great example of an intermediate barred spiral. I got around 14 hours of integration time at f/10 with my Celestron C8. It's still too noisy at the edges, and definitely needs more time.

apps can't use all the functionality that the native app has. For example, I can't shoot in 50 megapixels using the 3rd party app, not that I'd want that for astrophotography. But it makes me wonder how much slop is being processed out with AI with the other settings that I can't access. @siril.org

If I have time and clear skies tonight, then I'll try to compare results to Samsung's camera app. Unfortunately, with the S24 (and possibly S25), you can't take true raw images using their app. It's basically a jpg in a dng wrapper. Additionally, other

I've been experimenting with my S24 to capture the milky way. I'm skeptical of Samsung's ability to take a picture of it using its camera app. I'm just not sure how much of it is AI enhancement. So, I used a separate app with all the AI features turned off to take raw images. I stacked them in Siril

Why No One Agrees on Color in Astrophotography. Is Astrophotography Real Part 2: Context and Color
Every now and then, I see discussions about colors in astro photos. Are they real? A video I made on this a couple years ago has a surprising answer: all color everywhere is fake! It's the second video in a series. There's cognitive science to back it up! :)

The Truth About Pixel Size and Shot Noise (Itβs Not What You Think)
This was a fun video I made a few months back. I ran some simulations, and I showed how SNR decreases for each pixel (i.e., the signal and noise of each pixel decreases; the net effect is lower SNR).
