Anyway, my point is that the actual government weโre getting on the Canada-U.S. file is about as close to the campaign advertisement as a drop-shipped Temu Labubu. Or perhaps he correctly intuited what I did not: that this countryโs ruling class doesnโt really want a fight, but merely a kayfabe to keep up the appearance of virtue in the face of tyranny. A show. A rebellion on principle, but one without grit, blood, or teeth.
Savage from Jen Gerson on Carney's apology to Trump, but I suspect she may be right on this.

Out of budget lockup. I recently wrote: "Ottawa imposes a 10 percent luxury tax on yachts... yet a family buying a semi in Scarborough pays the equivalent of 15 percent in [DCs] and land transfer taxes."
Today the gov't addressed this by eliminating the luxury tax on yachts.
"The major threat to Canadian survival today is American control of the Canadian economy. The major issue of our times is not national unity but national survival, and the fundamental threat is external, not internal."

Smartphones are partly to blame for our decline in literacy. But we also should blame the men who run the companies that make them: our countryโs economic elite no longer see the value in an educated workforce.
02.11.2025 19:17 โ ๐ 26 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 1Canada has been suffering years of economic stagnation, deteriorating public services, and increasing popular distrust. Yet our government has decided that what we need to do is spend more money on defenceโand not just more money, but a lot more money than what we are spending at present.

โIn my work with the (Nuremberg Trial) defendants, I was searching for the nature of evil, and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy... a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy.โ

The rise of reactionary anti-system populism in Canada will be difficult to prevent unless the centre and left actively confront the deepening gaps in our democratic system before further economic turbulence intensifies the crisis.
29.10.2025 12:09 โ ๐ 20 ๐ 8 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 2A black-and-white photograph shows an adult woman standing and bending slightly forward, holding a piece of paper or card in her hands. In front of her, a young child dressed in a bunny costume, complete with a mask featuring large ears and a smiling face, stands holding a small basket. Another child is partially visible in the background, seated and possibly also in costume. The scene appears to be indoors, with a doorway and some furniture visible.
Happy Halloween!
Did you know that the modern phrase of trick-or-treat first emerged in Canada?
Or that children dressing in costumes and going door-to-door in North America was reported in Vancouver?
This is the story of Canada's Halloween history!

Canada needs migrants to help fill its current labour market gaps. Yet, as writer @marcellodicintio.bsky.social notes, this economic reliance is at war with a political climate that now treats those same migrants as a problem to be solved. thewalrus.ca/canada-held-the-...
