Me: Do I look okay in these shoes?

OH: it’s not the shoes.

The nice thing about the coppery shade of Manic Panic I’ve just used on my hair (while the grey grows in) is that it has a subtle plum undertone β€” which brings out the colour nuances in the giant forehead bruise that I got by falling headlong over the doorstep.

Follow me for more tips on ageing.

I am really disturbed by how much that look now says "Farage."

I had to do a bit of googling to get that one!

Smug Prison-Camp Matron is also not a good look for the accompanying portrait.

It’s appalling when you’re not completely dulled to it by familiarity.

It’s never great to be reminded how routinely those of us who drive are seconds from death.

What’s better than a newt? Newts! Newt sex!

Oooooh otter!

(After writing that, I had to look up the etymology of gerrymander. And it really does derive from the writhing of the salamander!)

Gerrymandering the language. Or in this case, salamandering it.

The opening chapter of Solnit’s book recounts in part the return of salmon to the newly undammed Klamath River, home also to Yurok people. This morning I watched a female salmon digging her redd here in Lagunitas Creek near Pt. Reyes Station. The book is much about persevering toward a better world.

Three-petalled white lily-like flower set against three green supporting sepals and three broad leaves. In a bed of redwood needles.

And the year’s first, perfect trillium.

I’d been on the trail for only a couple of minutes when I came on this lovely spring newt. Reminding me to watch where I put my great feet! #NewtJoy

I bow down to your skill & care. The hat with its gorgeous lining! And as for the garment, it looks like my dream of clothing.

I love hearing about red kites above the landscape of my childhood β€” something (as James notes) that simply was not there at the time. Thrilling also to find that an idealised memory can actually be improved upon: a dream of place where the trees grow, water flows, bricks become ivied, time happens.

Ah, I haven't read that β€” although it's on our shelf.

I felt that the novel didn't have any of the eccentric plot quirks/diversions/weaknesses that the films nearly all do, which makes me wonder whether those are all Powell's. It has a tightness of craft that I probably prefer.

There’s also an outstanding audio version read by Mark Gatiss.

Emeric Pressburger’s 2nd novel, The Glass Pearls, feels to me like an overlooked classic. Far too many contemporary resonances of pleasant people doing unspeakable things in the name of fascism, of other pleasant people thinking it can’t possibly be that bad, of the vital importance of memory…

I made myself a large bowl of soup from mostly foraged & homegrown things. Nettles, wild leek, wild bay leaves, our preserved lemons, etc. And held an ice pack to my head.

US-Israeli airstrikes overnight have successfully destroyed the infrastructure surrounding Europe’s nascent spine.
